On April 15, 2026, Serdar Berdimuhamedov, President of Turkmenistan, welcomed Martin Brugy, the newly inaugurated Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Italy, in Ashgabat.

During this cordial meeting, Ambassador Brugy presented his credentials and expressed heartfelt thanks for the opportunity to represent Italy in Turkmenistan. He brought along warm regards from Italian President Sergio Mattarella for the Turkmen leadership.

In response, President Berdimuhamedov congratulated the ambassador on his new role, wishing him well in enhancing the ties between the two nations. He also reciprocated greetings to President Mattarella, underscoring Turkmenistan's dedication to maintaining amicable diplomatic relations.

The discourse emphasized the significance of collaboration between Turkmenistan and European Union nations, recognizing Italy as a pivotal ally. Both parties noted their fruitful partnerships within global organizations like the United Nations, the European Union, and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe.

Moreover, they explored avenues for deeper cooperation across various domains including trade, economy, energy, transport, logistics, and agriculture. Energy collaboration, in particular, was highlighted, showcasing the involvement of leading Italian enterprises in significant projects.

Focus was placed on Eni's role, which continues to be vital in Turkmenistan's fuel and energy landscape through successful execution of major initiatives.

Transport and logistics emerged as another critical partnership area, with Turkmenistan actively shaping international transport corridors such as North-South and East-West routes to boost regional and global connectivity.

Additionally, the meeting spotlighted the importance of cultural, educational, and scientific exchanges. Increased enthusiasm for the Italian language and academic collaboration showcases the growing people-to-people connections between the two nations.

The ambassador reaffirmed Italy’s view of Turkmenistan as a dependable and neutral partner, expressing his commitment to fortifying diplomatic relations throughout his tenure.
