Manchester City has announced the signing of Marc Guehi, an England center back, from Crystal Palace on a five-and-a-half-year contract. This acquisition aims to help City reduce the gap to Premier League leaders Arsenal in the ongoing title chase.
While exact financial details remain undisclosed, sources indicate that the transfer is valued at approximately £20 million (RM108.8 million). At just 25 years of age, Guehi had six months left on his contract with Crystal Palace.
His addition comes as a significant boost for City, who have faced injuries to key defenders such as Ruben Dias, Josko Gvardiol, and John Stones. Guehi marks the club’s second signing during the January transfer window, following the acquisition of winger Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth.
City’s director of football, Hugo Viana, expressed excitement over Guehi's arrival: “Marc has established himself as one of the finest defenders in English football. We are excited to welcome him to Manchester City. He is a young talent, a natural leader, and committed to growth.”
The signing is considered a significant gain for City as Guehi was on the verge of joining Liverpool last year before the transfer fell through, and he had also piqued the interest of top European clubs including Bayern Munich.
A product of Chelsea’s academy, Guehi moved to Crystal Palace in 2021. Over his tenure, he made 188 appearances for the club and eventually became captain, leading them to their inaugural FA Cup victory last season and securing the Community Shield in August.
Representing England 26 times since his debut in 2022, Guehi was integral in Euro 2024, starting every match except the quarter-final, which he missed due to suspension.
“This opportunity truly reflects my hard work,” Guehi stated. “I am now with the best club in England alongside an incredible squad. It’s a fantastic experience.”
Guehi was absent from Palace's recent 2-1 defeat against Sunderland. In the aftermath, manager Oliver Glasner, who will depart at season's end, criticized the club’s management, describing his players as having been “completely abandoned.”
Currently, City holds the second position in the Premier League with 43 points from 22 matches, seven points behind Arsenal. Their next challenge is a Champions League match against Bodo/Glimt today, before they resume Premier League action against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.
