Malaysian IT Consultant Defrauded of RM1.5 Million in Crypto Scheme

Post by : Shakul

A 63-year-old IT consultant from Malaysia has reportedly fallen prey to an elaborate cryptocurrency scam, resulting in a loss of nearly RM1.5 million. The scam revolved around a counterfeit trading app named “Kakaue,” which promised enticing returns on investments and exemplifies the increasing risks posed by cybercriminals targeting potential investors.

The consultant became aware of this fraudulent investment opportunity through a Facebook advertisement in December 2023. Trusting the legitimacy of the ad, he clicked on the link which led to interactions with purported representatives of an investment firm.

The scammers introduced him to a trading program focused on USDT transactions, furthering his trust by adding him to a WhatsApp group where discussions highlighted investment opportunities, along with what appeared to be significant profits.

As part of the con, he was encouraged to download the “Kakaue” app, which consistently showcased inflated investment returns and account balances, deceiving him into believing in substantial financial growth. Motivated by the positive data displayed, he escalated his investments over time.

From March until September 2024, he executed nine transfers to six different bank accounts tied to the scammers, amassing a total of RM1,494,410. While the app continued to show promising returns, it provided a false sense of security regarding the investments.

Complications arose when he sought to retrieve his initial investment and alleged profits. His withdrawal requests were repeatedly blocked from the platform, and communication with the scammers deteriorated.

Coming to the grim realization of being scammed, the consultant reported the incident to the Commercial Crime Investigation Division. An investigation has now been initiated concerning fraud and deceitful financial practices. Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant against online investment propositions that offer unrealistic returns and necessitate transfers to varied accounts.
