The 2025 London Marathon has established a significant milestone in the realm of charitable fundraising. Organizers declared that this year's event garnered an astonishing £87.3 million, eclipsing the former record of £73.5 million set in 2024. This impressive jump of £13.8 million, or nearly 19%, illustrates the marathon’s enduring legacy of generosity. Renowned for its charitable focus, this achievement solidifies the event as one of the most impactful fundraising instances worldwide.
Since its inception in 1981, the London Marathon has been a symbol of community and philanthropy. With this latest record, the total contributions over the years have now reached an impressive £1.4 billion. Participants, each running for diverse causes, have played a vital role in this history. From advancing medical research to supporting social initiatives and environmental projects, the funds from the marathon are transforming lives across the UK and beyond.
This year's run not only broke fundraising records but also achieved the title of the largest marathon globally. A remarkable 56,640 runners completed the race, setting a new world record for the highest number of finishers in a single marathon. The event also showcased outstanding performances, featuring a new women’s-only world record achieved by Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa, who finished the course in 2 hours, 15 minutes, and 50 seconds, adding a remarkable highlight to the marathon's narrative.
The enthusiasm surrounding the London Marathon continues to escalate each year. Organizers disclosed that 1,133,813 individuals entered the ballot for the 2026 race—marking a world record for marathon entries. This overwhelming influx underscores the marathon’s distinct allure as both a sporting endeavor and a means for fostering positive change. Scheduled for Sunday, 26 April 2026, anticipation is already building for another invigorating event.
Enthuse, the official fundraising partner of the London Marathon, also reported a record year. Their report indicated that participants raised over £35.8 million through its digital platforms. The mean donation stood at £46.75, while the average fundraising page attracted £2,809, reflecting the kindness of donors and the commitment of runners dedicated to their causes.
Chester Mojay-Sinclare, CEO and founder of Enthuse, labeled the event as an “extraordinary force for good.” He noted that the increasing fundraising potential benefits more charities each year, enabling their essential work.
Hugh Brasher, CEO of London Marathon Events, commended all participants and supporters for their tremendous dedication. “Thousands of charities directly benefit from the funds raised by the incredible efforts of those who ran 26.2 miles on Sunday 27 April,” he explained. “This remarkable sum will empower these organizations to create a difference year-round.”
He further highlighted that the London Marathon transcends a mere race, representing a celebration of community, resilience, and compassion. Each runner’s journey contributes to the event’s legacy of inspiring generosity.
The official charity partner for the 2025 London Marathon, Pancreatic Cancer UK, celebrated the impressive total of £2.8 million raised by its runners. Diana Jupp, the organization’s CEO, expressed immense pride in the participants for their achievements. “We are incredibly proud of our runners who accepted the ultimate challenge, collectively raising £2.8 million,” she stated.
She emphasized that these funds are being utilized to advance crucial research on early detection and treatment methods for pancreatic cancer. This accomplishment exemplifies how the London Marathon continues to support life-saving efforts across various sectors.
The London Marathon has always symbolized more than just a sporting occasion; it unites diverse communities—from elite athletes to novice runners—all driven by a single objective: to effect positive change. The 2025 event highlighted the essence of community spirit, philanthropy, and human endurance.
