Lithuania has declared a state of emergency after a series of incidents involving smuggler balloons crossing from Belarus. The Lithuanian government said these balloons threaten public safety and disrupt civil aviation, forcing Vilnius airport to halt operations multiple times.
The balloons are reportedly used by smugglers to transport contraband cigarettes across the border. Interior Minister Vladislav Kondratovic said the state of emergency was announced not only because of disruptions to civil aviation but also due to national security concerns. The declaration gives the military greater freedom to act alongside the police or independently, though details on the specific measures were not immediately shared. The duration of the emergency was also not specified.
Belarus has denied any responsibility for the balloons. It has accused Lithuania of provocations, including sending a drone to drop what it called “extremist material.” Lithuania, a member of NATO and the European Union, rejected these accusations as false.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called the balloon incidents a “hybrid attack” by Belarus and said the situation at the border is worsening. The European Union has expressed serious concern over the repeated border disruptions and their impact on civil aviation and security.
Lithuania has previously declared states of emergency in the border region. In 2021, the country restricted access to parts of the Belarus border due to illegal migration. In 2022, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Lithuania imposed emergency measures over fears of potential attacks and propaganda, including restrictions on free speech to counter misinformation.
The latest state of emergency underscores Lithuania’s concern over security and public safety. Smuggler balloons may appear small, but they can cause serious disruption to airports, affect international travel, and pose broader security risks. The government’s decision reflects the need to protect citizens and maintain control over a sensitive border area.
This situation also highlights rising tensions between Belarus and Lithuania. The Baltic nation is seeking to ensure that border activities, whether by smugglers or state actors, do not compromise its safety or stability. NATO and EU allies are closely watching the situation, as it touches on regional security in Eastern Europe.
As Lithuania moves forward with the state of emergency, it will need to balance security measures with civil rights and transparency. The incidents show how new forms of smuggling and hybrid threats are challenging governments today, and why nations must remain vigilant to protect both citizens and infrastructure.
