Concerns Emerge Over Worker Conditions at Labubu Doll Factory in China

Post by : Mina Rahman

Serious allegations regarding labor conditions have been raised against the Shunjia Toys Co Ltd, the factory responsible for manufacturing the well-known Labubu dolls. China Labor Watch (CLW), a U.S.-based labor rights organization, indicated that workers endured long hours, were compelled to sign contracts that were either unfinished or blank, and did not receive paid leave.

The Labubu dolls, recognized for their intriguing "blind box" feature where the contents remain hidden until unboxed, have taken the global market by storm. Pop Mart, the Beijing-based toy company behind the brand, has acknowledged the accusations and emphasized that it is actively investigating the situation. The company affirmed its commitment to upholding labor standards and pledged to address any discrepancies found among its suppliers.

In addition, Pop Mart detailed its routine audits of suppliers, which include annual evaluations conducted by independent and respected auditing firms.

Focusing on Shunjia Toys, located in Guangdong province, CLW's investigation involved discussions with 51 employees to review hiring practices, contract clarity, and working conditions. This factory is vital for Pop Mart, employing more than 4,500 individuals.

The investigation uncovered various labor issues, such as unlawful overtime, ambiguous contract definitions, and inadequate safety training. While no instances of child labor were detected, workers as young as 16 faced the same working conditions as adults, lacking the necessary protections mandated by Chinese law.

CLW has urged Pop Mart to take immediate action, calling for compensation for the affected workforce and the enforcement of adherence to both Chinese labor laws and international standards. The organization pointed out that labor situations in facilities like Shunjia are significantly impacted by the sourcing and scheduling practices of the brands they supply.

Labubu dolls, featuring whimsical characters with sharp teeth, have created a worldwide phenomenon, generating long lines in stores and bolstered by endorsements from celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Lisa from the K-pop sensation Blackpink, aiding Pop Mart in broadening its global impact.
