Kriti Sanon Discusses Gender Pay Disparity in Bollywood

Post by : Shakul

Kriti Sanon, a prominent Bollywood actress, has candidly addressed the issue of gender pay disparity in the Indian film industry. During a recent interview, she highlighted the financial hurdles female actors frequently encounter, which their male counterparts often escape. This has reignited dialogs about equal pay and respect in a male-dominated entertainment sector.

Sanon shared that producers often negotiate the compensation of leading actresses in efforts to cut budgets, while significant funds are dedicated to male stars. She expressed that disparities in pay and recognition for women in the industry remain critical issues, despite some shifts toward progress.

The actress underlined the persistent patriarchy within Bollywood, indicating that gender inequality manifests subtly on set. She noted how production crews often prioritize the convenience of male actors over female ones, a practice she argues may seem minor but reveals deeper issues of respect and fairness in the workplace.

Reflecting on her earlier experiences, Sanon recounted the difficulty of voicing her concerns about equal treatment. She mentioned times when less experienced male co-stars received preferential treatment, clarifying that the focus was never on luxury, but on achieving professional equality. Despite an evolving landscape, she believes that unconscious biases still linger in the industry.

Sanon also reminisced about the pivotal moments in her career, particularly the success of her film “Mimi”, which she considers a major breakthrough. The film, released online during the pandemic, debunked stereotypes about her acting prowess, earning her praise from both audiences and critics.

Winning the National Award for Best Actress for “Mimi” stands as one of her career highlights. However, she acknowledged facing disappointment in securing roles, having often lost out to star kids or more connected actors. These experiences were emotionally taxing, as she felt capable of delivering more significant performances.

Sanon’s remarks contribute significantly to ongoing conversations regarding equality and fairness in Bollywood. Discussions surrounding pay gaps, nepotism, and treatment of artists continue to grow, with many in the industry advocating for a more equitable environment where everyone’s contributions are valued, irrespective of gender.
