In a thrilling showdown at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) etched their name in IPL lore once again, successfully defending their title to claim a second consecutive trophy with a gripping five-wicket triumph over Gujarat Titans during the IPL 2026 final.
Gujarat Titans, put in to bat first, struggled to establish any momentum as RCB's bowling unit delivered a disciplined performance. Key partnerships were lacking, with Washington Sundar’s unbeaten half-century and support from Nishant Sindhu helping Gujarat attain a modest total of 155 runs for 8 wickets in their 20 overs.
From the outset, RCB’s bowlers took control of the match. Rasikh Dar Salam made a significant impact, claiming three pivotal wickets. Veteran bowlers Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood each contributed with two wickets, maintaining consistent pressure and preventing Gujarat from building their innings in crucial phases.
Chasing a target of 156, RCB got off to a flying start. Venkatesh Iyer provided explosive momentum with a rapid 32 from just 16 balls, forming a solid early partnership with Virat Kohli that pushed Gujarat onto the back foot.
Despite Gujarat's efforts to claw back into the game by taking quick wickets and reducing RCB to 132 for 5, Virat Kohli remained unfazed. Displaying incredible composure, the former captain anchored the innings, ensuring a smooth continuation of the chase.
Kohli’s knock concluded at a remarkable 75 not out from just 42 balls, featuring nine boundaries and three impressive sixes. He struck a spectacular six over long-on to clinch the victory, culminating in euphoric celebrations among RCB players and fans as they reached their target with two overs to spare.
This victory represents another high in Kohli's stellar career. His match-winning performance earned him the Player of the Match award, marking him as one of the oldest recipients of this accolade in an IPL final. Moreover, this win reinforces RCB's position as one of the preeminent franchises in the history of the league.
Captain Rajat Patidar dedicated this title win to fans who tragically lost their lives celebrating their previous championship victory. This emotional tribute added profound meaning to a memorable night, as RCB not only celebrated back-to-back IPL titles but also fortified their legacy in Indian cricket.
