The Los Angeles Kings triumphed over the Ottawa Senators with a 2-1 scoreline at Crypto Arena on Monday, wrapping up a successful season series against the Senators. As the match progressed, tension mounted, with all goals being netted in the closing 14 minutes. This victory also marked the Kings’ second home win out of nine matches played this season.
In their first encounter on November 15 in Ottawa, the Kings secured a narrow 1-0 win, characterized by minimal action and a combined 35 shots on goal. Monday’s game largely mirrored that slow start, the standout moment being the tribute to former Kings defenseman Jordan Spence, who joined Ottawa over the offseason.
Brandt Clarke emerged as the game-changer for the Kings, netting the winning goal and enhancing his performance on the night. “It’s not always flashy, but when we play a complete 60 minutes, we are hard to beat,” said Clarke. He scored during a power play, deflecting off Artem Zub with just over six minutes to go, marking his first point in 12 games and third goal of the season.
Warren Foegele also contributed a goal for the Kings, with Joel Edmundson racking up two assists. Veteran goaltender Darcy Kuemper was a wall in the net, stopping 27 shots and securing the victory with praise from his teammates, including a light-hearted suggestion from Clarke for Team Canada to consider him for the Winter Olympics.
For Ottawa, Fabian Zetterlund found the net once, while goaltender Leevi Meriläinen made 20 saves. The Senators were missing vital players, including captain Brady Tkachuk and alternate captain Thomas Chabot, both out due to upper-body injuries. They attempted a final push by pulling their goalie, leading to a close call from Quinton Byfield, whose long shot struck the post.
The Kings’ penalty kill stood out, successfully thwarting all three power plays from Ottawa. Foegele’s goal marked a turning point for him after a slow season start, where he had only three goals. Coach Jim Hiller commended both Foegele and Phil Danault for their performances, citing Danault’s key faceoff victories in the game’s closing moments.
Earlier in the second period, Ottawa had near-scoring chances, notably with Dylan Cozens being thwarted by Kuemper, followed by a shot from Drake Batherson hitting the post. The Kings too came close to scoring first, with another post shot from Byfield denying them.
The final tally for Los Angeles came from Foegele, assisted by Joel Armia and Joel Edmundson, sealing the 2-1 win and giving the Kings their first victory in four games. Armia’s point streak extended to three games, bolstering the team’s confidence going forward.
Showcasing persistence and strategy, the Kings broke through late in the game, combining solid defense with timely goals and Kuemper’s stellar goaltending, earning a hard-fought victory over a determined but shorthanded Senators team.
