Two-time PGA Championship victor Justin Thomas announced via Instagram the successful completion of a microdiscectomy procedure. This surgery was necessary to address a disc issue in his back that had resulted in persistent hip pain over several months. Following an MRI that revealed the need for intervention, Thomas expressed gratitude to the medical professionals at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York for their exceptional care during the operation.
In his post, Thomas detailed how he had struggled with significant hip pain and after taking a break, the discomfort only intensified. Medical evaluations indicated that surgery was the most effective treatment option for his disc-related issues. He was discharged soon after the surgery and reassured his followers that he was ready to embark on a substantial recovery process.
For the next few weeks, Thomas plans to prioritize complete rest before transitioning to rehabilitation. He conveyed confidence in his medical and training support teams, expressing optimism about returning to the sport even stronger than prior. His message emphasized the importance of recovery first, with hopes pinned on a promising golf future.
Despite the physical challenges faced this season, Thomas had notable achievements, including winning the RBC Heritage after a thrilling playoff against Andrew Novak, marking his first victory in three years. However, the major championships did not yield the same success, as he missed out at both the PGA Championship and the U.S. Open, and struggled at the Masters and the Open Championship, finishing outside the top 30 in each.
Ending his competitive year positively, Thomas participated in the Ryder Cup, scoring two wins and two losses, with a standout performance in singles against Tommy Fleetwood. This victory provided a confidence boost as he wrapped up the season on a high note.
Throughout the season, injury setbacks could not overshadow Thomas's competitive spirit, finishing No. 8 in the Official World Golf Rankings, securing three runner-up finishes, and eight top-10 placements, confirming his status as one of the tour’s most skilled players.
Thomas was clear that he would not be hurried back into competition. He urged fans to refrain from anticipating a precise return date, stating that while he will be sidelined from early 2026 tournaments, he is committed to allowing his disc sufficient time to heal, minimizing the chance of recurrence. He firmly believes in being patient now for a long-lasting career in golf.
The upcoming PGA Tour season is set to kick off on January 15 with the Sony Open in Hawaii, followed by several more events. Thomas is expected to miss the Sony Open as he continues to focus on healing, with plans to return only when he is fully prepared.
Fans, peers, and golf analysts are hopeful for a healthy return, as, at his best, Thomas is regarded as one of the most talented golfers globally. This surgery presents him with an invaluable opportunity to recover thoroughly, and many anticipate his comeback stronger and ready to vie for additional major titles.
