Endangered Crested Ibises Make Their Comeback in Japan

Post by : Shakul

In a historic moment for wildlife conservation, Japan proudly announced the release of eight endangered crested ibises into their natural habitat in Hakui City, tracking a critical step toward reviving a once-extinct species. This significant release ceremony unfolded in the Noto region, an area historically populated by these majestic birds before their disappearance.

Locally referred to as "Toki," the crested ibis is recognized as one of East Asia's most cherished avian species. Distinguished by its elegant white plumage, subtle orange-pink wing hues, and characteristic red eye markings, the bird has always held a vital cultural and ecological place in Japan.

The ceremony saw an attendance of local community members, conservation advocates, and dignitaries, including Crown Prince Akishino and Princess Kiko. Observers witnessed the beautiful birds take flight from specially designed wooden cages, symbolizing a renewed hope for the restoration of this species within its original ecosystem.

Once thriving, the crested ibis population in Japan drastically dwindled during the 20th century due to unsustainable hunting practices, habitat loss, and environmental changes. By the 1970s, the species had vanished from Honshu, culminating in the death of the last native Japanese ibis on Sado Island in 2003.

A notable conservation collaboration between Japan and China has played a pivotal role in reversing the decline of this species. In 1999, a pair of crested ibises gifted by China successfully bred, marking the beginning of a dedicated breeding program. Consequently, ongoing conservation initiatives have allowed for a gradual population increase, with an estimated 500 birds now residing on Sado Island.

The newly released ibises were nurtured at a conservation facility in Niigata Prefecture’s Sado Island. Officials have also declared intentions to introduce ten more birds in forthcoming efforts aimed at enhancing the wild population and broadening their habitat.

This event holds particular importance for the Noto region as it continues to recover from the devastating earthquake of 2024. Both conservationists and community members aspire for the return of the cherished Toki to symbolize renewal, resilience, and the harmonious coexistence of nature and humanity.
