A tragic incident unfolded at Rome's iconic Pantheon as a 69-year-old Japanese visitor, Morimasa Hibino, lost his life following a fall from the perimeter wall. Local media report that this unfortunate event took place around 21:50 local time (19:50 GMT).
Emergency services and police were notified by a priest who discovered Hibino lying in a ditch close to the ancient structure. Firefighters had to force open a gate for access to the scene, where Hibino was sadly declared dead. Preliminary investigations indicate he may have lost his footing while perched atop the wall, falling approximately seven meters (22.9 feet).
Authorities are currently scrutinizing surveillance footage from the vicinity to piece together the details surrounding this tragic accident. While the precise cause of the fall remains under investigation, officials are advising tourists to proceed with caution in elevated or precarious areas of historic sites such as the Pantheon.
This Roman landmark, renowned as one of Italy's most frequented attractions, sees millions of visitors annually. This somber event highlights the hazards that can arise when proper safety measures are not adhered to at notable heritage sites.
As investigations continue, the tourist community in Rome is reeling from the tragedy, emphasizing the urgent need for enhanced safety protocols at such historical attractions.
