Jalue Dorje might resemble any typical American teen, but his journey diverges significantly from that of his peers. Raised in the United States, he was acknowledged by the Dalai Lama during his early childhood as the reincarnation of a notable Buddhist lama. Now, at nineteen, he has relocated to India, dedicating himself to becoming a spiritual figure in Tibetan Buddhism.
Dorje grew up in Columbia Heights, near Minneapolis. Like many in his age group, he enjoyed activities such as football, gaming, rap music, and movies. Even while indulging in late-night gaming sessions, he balanced these interests with daily studies of Buddhist scriptures and Tibetan calligraphy.
His life took a pivotal turn after graduating high school last year. Leaving his family behind, Dorje joined the Mindrolling Monastery in northern India, a key hub for Tibetan Buddhist education and spiritual growth.
Recently, he made a trip to Kathmandu, Nepal, for sacred rituals and teachings at the renowned Shechen Monastery, a significant site in Tibetan Buddhism. During this journey, he was reunited with his parents, who supported him in his new spiritual endeavor.
While he wears maroon and gold monk robes, traces of his American roots remain. He pairs these robes with white Crocs adorned with playful charms. He still enjoys watching sports, Marvel films, and video games, finding a balance between his monastic commitment and personal interests.
Dorje was identified as a spiritual leader from just four months old. Confirmed as the eighth Terchen Taksham Rinpoche by senior Tibetan Buddhist masters, he received blessings from the Dalai Lama during a 2010 meeting in Wisconsin. The Dalai Lama advised his parents to allow him to grow up in the U.S. before embracing monastic life.
Navigating both worlds was essential for Dorje. His mornings involved memorizing sacred texts, followed by school and football practice, while evenings were filled with lessons in Tibetan culture and modern entertainment.
Described as calm and positive by friends and teachers, he gained respect for his encouragement of teammates during games and for his representation of the Tibetan community in Minnesota. He also cultivated an interest in journalism and storytelling through high school.
Life in the monastery starkly contrasts his American upbringing. Dorje adapts to a strict routine focused on prayers, meditation, and lessons in Buddhist philosophy. He even washes his clothes by hand and sustains himself on simple meals while sharing quarters with monks from various Asian backgrounds.
Despite the challenges, Dorje is optimistic about his future. After years of study and spiritual development, he aspires to return to the U.S. to share Buddhism and assist the Tibetan community in Minnesota. Inspired by figures such as Mahatma Gandhi and the Dalai Lama, he aims to become a leader fostering peace and compassion.
