On the morning of December 24, 2025, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) marked a critical milestone with the successful deployment of the BlueBird Block-2 communication satellite via its heavy-lift Launch Vehicle Mark 3 (LVM3).
Launching at 8:55 a.m. from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, the LVM3 rocket efficiently delivered the satellite into low Earth orbit within just 15 minutes of takeoff, showcasing remarkable precision in the mission.
This achievement is significant for India's space program, as BlueBird Block-2 is now recognized as the largest commercial communications satellite ever to be sent into low Earth orbit, weighing in at 6,100 kilograms—the heaviest satellite launched from Indian soil.
According to ISRO Chairman Dr. V. Narayanan, the satellite was placed into orbit with an impressive deviation of less than two kilometers, rating the performance as one of the finest executed by any launch vehicle worldwide. He added that this mission was India’s first commercial endeavor for a client based in the United States.
With this successful launch, India has successfully positioned a total of 434 satellites for 34 countries, reinforcing its reliability as a global launch services provider.
Developed by AST SpaceMobile in the U.S., the BlueBird Block-2 satellite is part of a next-gen constellation aimed at offering direct-to-mobile satellite communications. This technology promises to provide 4G and 5G connectivity, allowing voice calls, video calls, messaging, and data streaming directly to standard smartphones.
Featuring an extensive 223-square-meter phased array antenna, the satellite stands as the largest commercial communications satellite placed in low Earth orbit.
This launch marks the 104th mission from Sriharikota and the ninth successful operation of the LVM3 vehicle, maintaining a perfect success rate in its third dedicated commercial venture. Notably, this mission follows just 52 days after the previous LVM3 launch on November 2, 2025, marking an unprecedented quick succession of LVM3 missions.
ISRO officials emphasized that this success resulted from thorough collaboration among various teams across ISRO centers, demonstrating the advancing capability of India’s heavy-lift launch systems.
The LVM3-M6 mission enhances India’s preparedness for future undertakings, including both uncrewed and crewed Gaganyaan missions, growth in commercial launch services, and broader international collaboration in space exploration.
