Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on Monday rejected a renewed offer of talks from U.S. President Donald Trump. Khamenei also denied Trump’s claim that the United States had destroyed Iran’s nuclear capabilities. Trump had recently suggested that the U.S. could negotiate a “peace deal” with Tehran, following a ceasefire in Gaza between Israel and Hamas. He also stated that U.S. military action had damaged Iran’s nuclear program.
Khamenei said that any deal with the U.S. that comes with pressure or predetermined outcomes is not a real deal, but an imposition and bullying, according to state media. He added, “Trump says he is a dealmaker, but if a deal is accompanied by coercion and its outcome is predetermined, it is not a deal but rather an imposition and bullying.” He also strongly rejected Trump’s statement about Iran’s nuclear program, saying: “The U.S. president proudly says they bombed and destroyed Iran's nuclear industry. Very well, keep dreaming! What does it have to do with America whether Iran has nuclear facilities or not? These interventions are inappropriate, wrong, and coercive.”
Iran and the United States had five rounds of indirect nuclear talks before the June air strikes. During these 12 days, Israel and the U.S. bombed Iranian nuclear sites, aiming to limit Iran’s nuclear capabilities. Western countries have long accused Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons secretly, mainly through uranium enrichment. Tehran, however, insists that its nuclear program is only for civilian energy purposes and not for weapons.
Khamenei’s remarks highlight continuing tensions between Iran and the U.S. The rejection comes amid a complex Middle East environment, including the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict and broader U.S. efforts to stabilize the region. Analysts say this stance shows that Iran is unlikely to make quick concessions on its nuclear program under current U.S. pressure. The U.S.-Iran relationship remains strained. While Trump seeks negotiations, Iran insists on maintaining its nuclear program and rejects any dialogue it sees as coerced or unfair. Observers say this could prolong regional tensions and complicate international efforts to limit nuclear proliferation.
