Taiwan has expressed concern regarding what it has termed "unusual" shifts in China’s military hierarchy, with the recent news that two senior Chinese generals are under investigation. Defence Minister Wellington Koo stated on Monday that Taiwan will be vigilant in discerning Beijing’s intentions during this rare scrutiny of military leaders.
On Saturday, China announced that Zhang Youxia, vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission and a top military official under President Xi Jinping, is being investigated for serious breaches of discipline and law. Alongside Zhang, another key military figure, Liu Zhenli, is also implicated.
Probes of this nature into senior military officials are seldom seen in China’s political arena, suggesting the potential of internal strife within the People’s Liberation Army or President Xi Jinping's attempts to reinforce control over the military amid rising geopolitical tensions.
Taiwan’s Defence Ministry highlighted the importance of evaluating these developments meticulously, as any disruptions or shifts in the command structure of China’s military could significantly impact regional stability. Given its geographical closeness and ongoing security issues with China, Taiwan remains alert for changes that might affect peace in the Taiwan Strait.
The probe into Zhang Youxia, a prominent figure allied with President Xi, implies potential challenges regarding loyalty and discipline within the upper echelon of military leadership. This could indicate broader measures to consolidate authority and reinforce the military's alignment with the central government's strategic objectives.
Global observers are keenly watching these unfolding internal investigations, especially as they occur during a time of rising international scrutiny towards China, while Taiwan strengthens its defense capabilities.
The developing situation contributes to the intricate web of cross-strait relations and raises concerns about the stability and future trajectory of China’s military command.
