In Winnipeg, the bereaved family of a young woman who passed away following a plasma donation is urging authorities to initiate a fresh probe into the safety measures employed at a private plasma collection center. This incident has sparked renewed apprehensions across Canada regarding the adequacy of donor screening, the training of staff, and regulatory scrutiny of for-profit plasma donation facilities.
Rodiyat Alabede, an international student enrolled at the University of Winnipeg, tragically lost her life in October 2025 due to a sudden cardiac arrest shortly after donating plasma at a facility run by Grifols. According to family representatives, an autopsy later revealed that she had an undiagnosed enlarged heart condition prior to her donation.
Family representative Katherine Lanteigne expressed concern that the plasma donation exerted "significant stress" on Alabede’s heart, asserting that adequate medical screening should have flagged potential health risks. The family suspects that critical safety procedures may have been overlooked at the clinic.
The situation has raised alarm as Alabede was one of two individuals who died after plasma donation procedures in Winnipeg within the last year. Health advocates, alongside patient safety organizations, are now demanding more stringent oversight of Canada's expanding plasma collection sector.
An earlier investigation by Health Canada concluded that there was no direct correlation between the plasma donation process and the fatalities. Despite this, the family and advocacy groups contend that new medical findings and concerns from within highlight unresolved issues regarding the clinic’s practices.
According to advocates connected to this case, there are worries regarding the training of staff and their reactions during the plasma collection process. Lanteigne asserted that some employees may have lacked a proper understanding of machine alerts or when specific medical protocols should have been halted. She termed the alleged issues as "egregious," leading the family to feel they have "more questions than answers."
Grifols has refuted any claims of wrongdoing, asserting that Health Canada’s inquiry found no evidence of machinery failure or staff negligence related to the incident. The company remains fully cooperative with regulators while reviewing their processes to enhance donor safety.
The unfolding situation has ignited a larger discussion in Canada surrounding the practices of paid plasma donation clinics and the accompanying medical oversight. Some health advocates caution that these private facilities could be pressured to accommodate high volumes of donors swiftly, while others defend the safety of plasma donation when proper medical protocols are upheld. Online discussions and local conversations in Winnipeg have raised the possibility of mandating further cardiac assessments or stricter medical tests prior to plasma donations.
Amidst this controversy, the family is clamoring for a comprehensive independent investigation into the death, while advocacy organizations urge federal authorities to scrutinize safety standards at plasma clinics nationwide. The matter is expected to remain in the public and political spotlight as calls for enhanced transparency persist.
