At a distinguished ceremony in Nikko, Japan, the Louvre Abu Dhabi and Richard Mille announced Ryoichi Kurokawa as the recipient of the fifth Richard Mille Art Prize. Kurokawa, chosen from a competitive shortlist of artists showcased in Art Here 2025, received a prize of US$60,000 for his innovative piece skadw-.
skadw- redefines shadows through an immersive sensory experience. The installation utilizes light, sound, and drifting fog to create a fluid landscape, allowing shadows to take on a tangible form. A delicate beam of light navigates through layers of mist, producing transient patterns that appear and vanish, inviting viewers to experience absence and space as palpable realities.
Inspired by the Japanese philosophy of Ma, which celebrates the significance of intervals and voids, Kurokawa perceives shadow not merely as a by-product of illumination but as a crucial element that shapes perception.
Manuel Rabaté, Director of Louvre Abu Dhabi, lauded the piece: “skadw- intricately engages with the theme of ‘Shadows,’ revealing emotional depth and formal elegance, embodying the prize’s dedication to artistic innovation and excellence.”
Tilly Harrison, Managing Director of Richard Mille Middle East, remarked, “Kurokawa’s artistic approach unites Japanese heritage and global viewpoints, facilitating cross-cultural dialogues in contemporary art.”
The jury comprised prominent figures such as His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, Dr. Guilhem André, Maya Allison, Sophie Mayuko Arni, and Yuko Hasegawa, ensuring a thorough selection process.
Dr. André noted the artists’ inventive interpretations of this year's theme, highlighting how Art Here harmonizes modern works within the architecture of the Louvre Abu Dhabi. Sophie Mayuko Arni remarked that skadw- was among the most visited and appreciated artworks, showcasing the transformative influence of technology and new media in contemporary art.
Expressing his gratitude, Ryoichi Kurokawa stated, “skadw- allows shadows to shape perception, providing absence with a tangible presence. It is an honor to connect with varied audiences through my work.”
This year’s Art Here 2025 featured over 400 submissions from artists throughout the GCC, Japan, and MENA regions, with shortlisted works including contributions from Ahmed Alaqra, Jumairy, Rintaro Fuse, Hamra Abbas, and the artistic duo YOKOMAE et BOUAYAD, exhibited at Louvre Abu Dhabi until 28 December.
Art Here remains a premier platform that showcases contemporary artists, promoting innovative insights and fostering cross-cultural artistic dialogue.
