Dulles Airport Incident: 18 Passengers Hurt in People Carrier Crash

Post by : Raina Nasser

A collision involving a people carrier at Washington Dulles International Airport resulted in injuries to 18 passengers on Monday, according to airport officials.

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) reported the event occurred around 4:30 p.m. local time (21:30 GMT). The mobile lounge, which ferries passengers between terminals and planes, veered off course and struck a dock as it neared the terminal. Passengers exited the vehicle via stairs and were quickly taken to local hospitals, all with injuries deemed non-life-threatening.

As stated by airport spokesperson Crystal Nosal, the mobile lounge was in transit from Concourse D when the incident took place. Despite this accident, operations at the airport remain unaffected.

The precise number of passengers on board during the crash has not been released by the authorities.

Washington Dulles Airport, a major hub for the U.S. capital, operates a fleet of 19 mobile lounges, each capable of carrying over 100 people. These vehicles, which have been in use since 1959, have faced scrutiny for their aging design and questions regarding their efficiency in today’s air travel environment.

During a Senate hearing earlier this week, Trent Morse, a former Trump administration official and a recent nominee to the MWAA board, branded these vehicles as “historic relics” and criticized their ongoing use as “an embarrassment” for international travelers arriving in Washington.

Reports highlight that mobile lounges at Dulles have been linked to at least 16 accidents between 2007 and 2017, including one that resulted in a fatality.

This incident comes amid the backdrop of a U.S. government shutdown causing staffing shortages and resulting in flight delays at various major airports. Recently, the Trump administration instructed 40 airports, including Dulles, to implement a 10% reduction in air traffic to accommodate limited personnel.

As investigations proceed, airport officials have committed to reviewing all safety measures to ensure future incidents involving mobile lounges are prevented.
