India’s aviation sector is facing turbulence after the introduction of stricter pilot safety rules, which have caused major disruptions for IndiGo, the country’s largest airline. The new regulations, designed to reduce pilot fatigue, were implemented this year in two phases, with the latest phase starting on November 1, 2025. IndiGo admitted that it had not planned its rosters properly to meet the new rules, leading to widespread delays and flight disruptions across India.
The key safety measures are aimed at giving pilots more rest and limiting night flights to ensure they remain alert and safe while flying. Here are the main rules:
Weekly Pilot Rest: The weekly rest period for pilots has been increased from 36 hours to 48 hours. This extra rest is meant to help pilots recover from fatigue accumulated over long flying hours. Despite recent problems, this rule remains in effect.
Maximum Night Landings: The number of night landings a pilot can perform each week has been reduced from six to two. Night hours are considered from midnight to early morning, when alertness is lowest. This rule is designed to reduce risks during the most dangerous flying hours. However, the government has temporarily paused this limit for IndiGo until February 10, 2026, to help the airline manage its operations.
Flight Duty Limits: Pilots can now fly a maximum of 10 hours for flights that extend into night hours. Like the night landing rule, this limit has been temporarily suspended for IndiGo until February 10 to prevent further disruptions.
Rest Time and Leave: Personal leave taken by pilots cannot be counted as part of the mandatory 48-hour weekly rest period. This ensures that pilots receive the full rest time in addition to any leave. Currently, all airlines are exempted from this rule to allow normal air travel to resume.
The new regulations, first proposed in early 2024, were introduced after studies showed that fatigue is a major risk factor for pilot errors and accidents. Authorities believe that ensuring sufficient rest and limiting night duties will make air travel safer for passengers across India.
For IndiGo, the sudden impact of these rules revealed gaps in roster planning and preparedness. Experts say other airlines may also need to adjust their schedules to comply with the rules. While the government has offered temporary relief to prevent further chaos, the aviation sector must adapt to these rules fully in the coming months.
In the long term, these measures are expected to improve aviation safety in India. Passengers may experience short-term disruptions, but the rules are aimed at preventing accidents and ensuring that pilots remain alert and well-rested on every flight.
