In a landmark initiative, Kyrgyzstan has embarked on a pilot program to provide satellite internet connectivity by integrating a remote mountain school into the Starlink network. This significant development was announced by the Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, Adylbek Kasymaliev, during a video call from Bishkek on May 25, 2026, marking a pivotal stride toward enhancing digital access and educational resources for the country’s more secluded areas.
Located in the high-altitude village of Enilchek within the Issyk-Kul region, the comprehensive school is now the first institution in Kyrgyzstan to benefit from high-speed internet enabled through the Starlink satellite system. The challenging mountainous terrain and the absence of terrestrial communication infrastructure had left the school without reliable internet for years.
During the inauguration ceremony, Chairman Kasymaliev expressed his congratulations to the students and faculty, labeling the project a significant accomplishment in the quest for equitable education access. He emphasized that the government prioritizes digital education and internet availability, especially for children in remote mountainous locales across Kyrgyzstan.
As part of this initiative, five modern computers were donated to the school to enhance the learning environment and facilitate digital education. Kasymaliev also directed the Ministry of Education to swiftly incorporate the Enilchek school into national educational information networks, thus providing access to online resources and educational services.
Currently, only six schools throughout the nation lack internet connectivity, with plans to address their needs in the near future as part of a broader digital transformation agenda. Authorities envision that satellite internet technology can effectively address longstanding communication issues in remote mountainous regions, where conventional infrastructure is often challenging to establish.
Kyrgyzstan joined the Starlink global coverage map on May 23, 2026, after fulfilling the necessary technical and legal prerequisites. The local telecommunications partner, ElKat LLC, played a crucial role in setting up the infrastructure to align with international standards and support the satellite internet framework in the country.
The pilot initiative is being executed under a presidential directive issued in October 2025 concerning the deployment of non-geostationary satellite systems. While SpaceX meets the technical requirements for this project, the Kyrgyz government has indicated its willingness to collaborate with other international tech companies that comply with national safety and quality criteria.
The introduction of Starlink internet in Enilchek is viewed as a significant leap towards a digital future for Kyrgyzstan. Officials anticipate that this initiative will bolster education, enhance communication, and improve economic prospects for residents of some of the nation’s most remote regions.
