India Accuses Bangladesh of Neglecting Repatriation Requests

Post by : Shakul

India has stated that Bangladesh has not offered an “actionable response” to numerous diplomatic notes concerning the repatriation of alleged illegal Bangladeshi immigrants residing in India. A diplomatic document disclosed by Indian officials reveals that over 1,000 diplomatic notes and 456 subsequent reminders have been sent to Dhaka since September 2020, yet the cooperation required to tackle the matter efficiently has not been forthcoming.

The issue was underscored in a diplomatic note, or note verbale, dispatched by India’s Ministry of External Affairs to Bangladesh on April 30, 2026. This communication followed a protest by the Bangladeshi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which summoned the Indian envoy in Dhaka over comments from Assam’s then Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma relating to border issues between the two nations.

Reports indicate that Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed during a media interaction that under his governance, Indian border forces were allegedly “pushing in” suspected Bangladeshi nationals through unguarded stretches of the border. These remarks raised diplomatic alarms in Dhaka, prompting Bangladesh to seek clarifications from India. This incident has escalated into a major point of contention in talks regarding border management and bilateral relations.

In reaction, India’s communications have highlighted the nation’s ongoing efforts to repatriate suspected illegal immigrants through official channels over several years. The document noted that, despite persistent requests and reminders, Bangladesh has not offered the essential cooperation for verification and repatriation procedures. Indian authorities have emphasized the need for enhanced coordination between both countries to ensure effective border management and legal immigration practices.

The India-Bangladesh border, one of the longest international borders globally, has frequently been marred by disputes surrounding illegal immigration, border security, smuggling, and cross-border movements. Security agencies from both nations routinely collaborate on border issues, yet undocumented migration has remained a politically sensitive topic, particularly in border states like Assam and West Bengal.

Officials acquainted with the matter indicated that the ongoing diplomatic exchanges reflect India’s apprehension concerning national security, demographic shifts, and the complexities of identifying undocumented immigrants. Indian authorities consistently advocate for improved verification systems and expedited repatriation processes in partnership with Bangladesh. Conversely, Dhaka has asserted that nationality verification and legal protocols must be meticulously adhered to prior to accepting individuals for repatriation.

These recent diplomatic developments surface amid the ongoing broad cooperation between India and Bangladesh in trade, connectivity, energy, and regional security. Nevertheless, border-related issues and political comments occasionally stir tensions between the two. Analysts opine that both nations are likely to pursue diplomatic dialogue to prevent this issue from jeopardizing the broader bilateral relationship, which holds significant strategic importance in South Asia.
