Eight years ago, Bollywood actor Anushka Sharma and Indian cricket star Virat Kohli quietly rewrote the rules of Indian weddings. Their wedding in December 2017 was held in Italy and was kept completely secret until the very last moment. There were no leaked photos, no advance media reports, and no public hints. When the couple finally shared their wedding pictures, the entire country was taken by surprise.
Today, that wedding is remembered as a turning point in how Indian couples think about destination weddings and personal celebrations. Filmmaker Karan Johar recently reflected on this moment and described the event as a “covert operation” that changed the wedding culture in India.
Speaking during an interview linked to a wedding wear brand, Karan Johar said that the Anushka-Virat wedding transformed the “texture and DNA” of weddings, especially destination weddings. He recalled how the nation woke up to beautiful wedding photos without any idea that a marriage had even taken place. According to him, the secrecy, the location, and the bride’s wedding walk captured everyone’s attention and admiration.
Celebrity wedding planner Devika Narain, who worked closely on the event, explained that the importance of the wedding was not about showing wealth or grand scale. Instead, it was about planning, control, and personal choice. She noted that the couple proved weddings do not have to follow fixed traditions or public expectations. Couples, she said, realized they could plan their weddings in ways that truly reflect who they are.
Before this wedding, many Indian couples felt pressure to follow family traditions, invite large guest lists, and host multiple grand events. Anushka and Virat’s approach quietly challenged these ideas. Their decision to keep the wedding private and deeply personal encouraged a new generation to focus more on meaning than on display.
Over time, many couples began choosing smaller guest lists, private venues, and meaningful locations. Destination weddings became more intimate, and personal style became more important than tradition alone. Industry experts often point to this wedding as the moment when this shift truly began.
Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli had dated for four years before getting married on December 11, 2017. Today, they are parents to two children, daughter Vamika and son Akaay. The family now lives in London, choosing a quieter life away from constant attention so their children can grow up in a more peaceful environment.
Their wedding may have lasted only a few days, but its influence continues to shape Indian weddings even years later. What started as a secret ceremony in Italy has become a symbol of freedom, choice, and modern love for couples across the country.
