Brutal Attack on Hindu Man in Bangladesh Highlights Minority Violence

Post by : Mina Rahman

On December 31, a 50-year-old Hindu man, Khokon Das, was brutally attacked and set on fire in the Shariatpur district of Bangladesh. The incident unfolded as he was heading home, where a mob armed with sharp weapons assaulted him before igniting flames. This attack is the latest in a troubling series of violent incidents targeting the Hindu community in the country.

This incident marks the fourth assault on Hindus within a short span. Just a week prior, on December 24, a 29-year-old named Amrit Mondal was lynched by a mob in Hossaindanga, Kalimohar Union. Earlier still, on December 18, Dipu Chandra Das, a 25-year-old Hindu, was brutally murdered in Bhaluka Upazila, Mymensingh, after being falsely accused of blasphemy—he was attacked and his body was hung from a tree before being set ablaze.

These alarming episodes have raised serious questions regarding the safety and protection of religious minorities in Bangladesh. Violence against Hindus, Christians, Buddhists, and other groups has surged, particularly under the current interim government led by Yunus. International human rights organizations have vehemently condemned these acts.

India has expressed profound concern regarding the ongoing hostility towards minority groups in Bangladesh and is keenly observing the situation to ensure regional stability. The escalation of such violence has ignited widespread outrage, emphasizing the critical need for protective measures for at-risk communities.
