Halo is about to introduce itself to a fresh audience. Microsoft and Halo Studios have unveiled Halo: Campaign Evolved, a thorough remake of the beloved 2001 title, Halo: Combat Evolved, which is slated for release in 2026. This remake pledges to preserve the landmark moments that shaped the series while presenting a contemporary, visually impressive adventure.
Accessible on Xbox Series X|S, PC through Xbox and Steam, and PlayStation 5, this game promises seamless integration with Xbox Cloud Gaming and Xbox Play Anywhere, alongside its debut on Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass on launch day.
Crafted anew with Unreal Engine 5, Halo: Campaign Evolved will feature stunning 4K graphics, refreshed animations, re-recorded audio, and remastered score. The developers are dedicated to encapsulating the essence and atmosphere of the original title while modernizing the gameplay for today's audience. The remake is meant to enhance, not replace, the original, providing a “modern evolution” that honors its predecessors.
In an effort to broaden the narrative, the remake includes three introductory missions that delve into events leading to the classic gameplay. These missions introduce new settings, characters, and adversaries, further enriching the Halo universe’s lore. Traditional missions have been redesigned to feature improved pacing, deeper environmental storytelling, and more seamless navigation. The Library mission has undergone significant changes to heighten tension while preserving its characteristic ambiance.
The fusion of nostalgia and new features excites fans, with nine fresh weapons from the Halo series—including the Energy Sword, Battle Rifle, and Needle Rifle—debuting in the original campaign. Additionally, vehicle mechanics have been updated; players can now commandeer vehicles and operate the Covenant Wraith tank, a capability absent in the 2001 release.
Enhanced gameplay options include optional sprinting, an expanded Skull system packed with the most modifiers seen in a Halo campaign, full four-player online co-op, and a return of two-player split-screen on consoles. These improvements aim to allow both veteran players and newcomers to enjoy the game collaboratively.
By revisiting the original campaign, Halo Studios intends to establish an ideal entry point for new gamers, while also paying tribute to long-time fans’ experiences. Attendees of the Halo World Championships will have the chance to sample the reimagined universe ahead of the official release.
Scheduled for 2026, Halo: Campaign Evolved marks a thrilling new chapter for one of the most celebrated franchises in gaming, connecting nostalgia with contemporary gaming dynamics.
