Grandmaster Karthik Venkataraman showcased exceptional skill at the FIDE World Cup 2025, outmaneuvering Romanian GM Bogdan-Daniel Deac in a thrilling tiebreak to secure his place in the tournament's fourth round. This electrifying match unfolded in Panaji, Goa, on Sunday, as Karthik demonstrated remarkable composure and prowess.
At just 24 years old, Venkataraman triumphed in the second tiebreak game with the black pieces in a succinct 43 moves, following a draw in the initial rapid game. His strategic bishop maneuver and a tactical pin against Deac’s king brought him the coveted win, earning accolades from both fans and commentators.
In a post-match reflection, Karthik admitted, “My classical game against Deac wasn't my finest, yet I managed to defend. In the rapid games, my play improved. While I’m not sure about my standing in the first game, I definitely felt stronger. The second game flowed smoothly.”
His calm demeanor and adeptness in rapid play revealed not only his resilience but also his strategic intricacies. Venkataraman remained composed under pressure, threading together the right moves during critical instances.
Now, Karthik faces a formidable opponent in Le Quang Liem, one of Vietnam's elite grandmasters and a former World Blitz Champion. This upcoming duel promises to be challenging, but his confidence and current momentum position him well for further advancement.
His successful run has positioned him as one of India's key players in the Viswanathan Anand Cup, under which this esteemed World Cup event is held.
Karthik addressed the unique pressures of competing in a knockout scenario, stating, “The World Cup format vastly differs from Swiss or round-robin events, where you can afford to recover after a slip.” He highlighted the intensified pressure of possible elimination in each match.
His latest victory ensures that five Indian contenders will enter the fourth round of the FIDE World Cup—a significant milestone that illustrates the rising significance and consistency of Indian chess on a global stage.
The upcoming rest day on Monday offers players a chance to recuperate ahead of the next round. The Indian lineup draws attention for its depth of talent and tactical finesse.
While Karthik celebrates his success, disappointments arose for Vidit Gujrathi and Narayanan SL, both of whom were eliminated after hard-fought encounters.
Vidit kicked off his tiebreak match against Samuel Shankland from the U.S. on a high note, clinching victory in the first rapid game after 75 moves. However, a miscalculated queen exchange under time constraints led to his downfall in the second game. Following a string of rapid games, Vidit's journey concluded after losing in the sixth game.
On the other hand, Narayanan SL faced off against Yu Yangyi of China in a gripping battle. Despite strong defenses, he ultimately fell after a grueling 125-move game. The resilience he exhibited was noteworthy, yet he couldn’t withstand Yu's assault. The second game ended in a draw, sealing Narayanan’s exit from the competition.
Though their exits are disappointing, the remarkable efforts of both Vidit and Narayanan underscore the wealth of talent among Indian chess players at this level.
India's impressive performance in the FIDE World Cup 2025 has earned it recognition within the international chess community. With five players moving forward, India's chess prowess continues to resonate on the global stage.
Karthik Venkataraman’s outstanding trajectory is indicative of years dedicated to honing skills and rising competitiveness within Indian chess. His confident demeanor, tactical sharpness, and tenacity mark him as a player to watch as the rounds progress.
With the intensity of competition escalating, Karthik is set to focus on his next encounter against Le Quang Liem. Bolstered by the momentum of his recent victories and the support of Indian fans, he aspires to continue his inspiring run in Goa.
Karthik’s performance thus far has already carved out a significant identity for him in this year’s FIDE World Cup, heralding the rise of a new generation of formidable Indian chess players.
