On Monday evening, residents reported the sight of dead fish drifting in various parts of Al Muzoon Canal, triggering swift action from the Environment Agency of Abu Dhabi. The agency confirmed that an algal bloom had emerged, resulting in diminished dissolved oxygen levels that have proven fatal for aquatic life.
Initial assessments shared via the agency's social media indicate that the bloom likely originated from increased nutrient levels and stagnant water circulation within the canal. These factors can lead to a rapid surge in algae, which, in some cases, may become toxic and disturb the aquatic ecosystem.
Cleanup crews were dispatched overnight to remove the deceased fish and implement necessary disposal measures. In addition, samples of water and fish have been collected for analysis to understand the extent and dynamics of the algal bloom. Ongoing monitoring will continue to observe any shifts in the ecological conditions of the canal.
While investigations are still underway, officials have indicated that a comprehensive technical evaluation is being conducted. Further updates will be released once the analysis is completed. In the meantime, residents are urged to report any similar occurrences to ensure prompt responses across the emirate.
