Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has proudly completed the UAE's inaugural cardiac neuroablation procedure, representing a significant milestone in advanced cardiac healthcare. This minimally invasive technique presents a fresh option for patients who experience recurrent fainting due to abnormal heart rhythms, offering an alternative to the traditional reliance on pacemakers.
Currently, cardiac neuroablation is performed in only select, state-of-the-art cardiac centres globally. This pioneering procedure addresses the root causes of heart rhythm irregularities tied to the autonomic nervous system rather than merely alleviating symptoms through long-term medical devices.
The focus lies on abnormal nervous signals resulting from excessive vagus nerve activity, which can abruptly reduce heart rate and blood pressure, causing multiple fainting episodes. By strategically adjusting these nerve pathways, physicians can achieve a stable heart rhythm through a targeted and minimally invasive method.
Dr Georges-Pascal Haber, CEO of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, remarked that this achievement underscores the institution's dedication to delivering top-tier cardiac care while further bolstering Abu Dhabi’s stature as a leading regional hub for specialized healthcare.
The procedure was successfully performed on a 48-year-old woman whose life had been significantly disrupted by frequent and unpredictable fainting spells. While doctors typically resort to permanent pacemakers in such scenarios, they opted for cardiac neuroablation to directly address the primary issue.
Dr Fereidoon Shafiei, from the Cardiovascular Medicine Department at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute, noted that the advent of cardiac neuroablation in the UAE signifies a notable advancement in heart care. The procedure empowers doctors to specifically target flawed heart rhythm pathways, potentially mitigating fainting incidents without necessitating permanent devices.
Using specialized catheters navigated through blood vessels, the treatment employs cutting-edge mapping technology to help physicians pinpoint and modify nerve pathways responsible for abnormal heart regulation, eliminating the need for invasive open-heart surgery.
Dr Khalid Bakr, an Associate Staff Physician in the Cardiovascular Medicine Department, emphasized that this advanced catheter-based procedure can vastly enhance patients’ quality of life by either reducing or altogether halting recurring fainting episodes.
Post-procedure, the patient experienced immediate improvements with stable heart rhythms noted during follow-ups. She returned to her daily routine without further fainting incidents, reporting enhanced energy levels and a significantly better quality of life.
The successful execution of cardiac neuroablation showcases Abu Dhabi's expanding role in pioneering cutting-edge medical treatments and reflects the broader trend towards precise and patient-centered healthcare solutions.
