Broadcast Rights Hurdles: FIFA World Cup 2026 in India and China

Broadcast Rights Hurdles: FIFA World Cup 2026 in India and China

Post by : Shweta

With the FIFA World Cup 2026 just a few weeks away, significant uncertainty lingers regarding broadcast rights in India and China, two of the largest media markets globally. While FIFA has secured agreements with broadcasters in over 175 territories, the situations in India and China remain unresolved, leaving millions of football fans anxious about their ability to watch the tournament legally.

Scheduled to commence on June 11 and hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the 2026 FIFA World Cup will feature a record 48 teams and a total of 104 matches. FIFA has already partnered with various major broadcasters, including FOX Sports and Telemundo in the U.S., BBC and ITV in the U.K., and Bell Media in Canada, alongside several key networks in Europe, South America, Africa, and Asia. However, agreements for broadcasting in India and China are still pending.

As previously reported by Reuters, FIFA declined a $20 million bid from the Reliance-Disney partnership for the Indian broadcast rights, deeming it insufficient. Initially, FIFA had valued the rights at nearly $100 million, later adjusting its asking price in subsequent negotiations. Sony has refrained from submitting a formal bid after evaluating the associated commercial risks.

Indian channels face challenges in broadcasting the matches due to the tournament's timing, as many games will air during late-night or early morning slots for local viewers. Media analysts project that this could hinder TV ratings and advertising returns compared to prior tournaments held in more favorable time zones. The overwhelming popularity of cricket in India has added another layer of caution among broadcasters regarding investments in football rights.

Nonetheless, India's digital audience remains vital for FIFA. During the 2022 FIFA World Cup final, India saw significant streaming activity on platforms like JioCinema, with millions of viewers tuning in. FIFA is reportedly aiming for a more lucrative long-term agreement owing to the expanding digital sports landscape in the country.

In China, the situation is similarly unresolved. The state broadcaster CCTV, which typically covers FIFA tournaments, has yet to finalize an agreement for the 2026 event. Although private discussions are ongoing, FIFA has not disclosed an official broadcasting partner in China. Analysts speculate that declining interest in football and general economic concerns in the sports sector may be hindering negotiations.

This delay is crucial since India and China collectively account for nearly a third of the global population and represent a substantial portion of international sports streaming audiences. Reports indicate that both nations played a significant role in digital viewership during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Experts warn that failing to secure broadcasting agreements in these regions could diminish FIFA's global reach and financial gains during one of the most significant tournaments in football history.

FIFA has acknowledged that discussions with broadcasters in both countries are active but maintains that the negotiations are confidential. The organization is optimistic about finalizing agreements before the tournament kicks off. However, with the event drawing closer, there is increasing pressure to complete these deals, ensuring millions of football fans can enjoy the World Cup.
