Arab Cup Playoff Between UAE and Saudi Arabia Canceled by FIFA

Arab Cup Playoff Between UAE and Saudi Arabia Canceled by FIFA

Post by : Mara Rahim

FIFA has formally canceled the highly anticipated third-place playoff match of the Arab Cup, which was set between the UAE national team and Saudi Arabia in Doha. This decision came after inclement weather conditions rendered the match nonviable.

Scheduled at Khalifa International Stadium, the game faced substantial disruptions due to continuous heavy rain, which led to water pooling on various sections of the pitch. As the rain persisted, the playing surface became increasingly hazardous, raising serious concerns regarding player safety and the integrity of the match.

Despite efforts to assess the situation and improve field conditions, continued rainfall hindered any attempts for recovery. Following thorough evaluations and discussions with match officials, FIFA ultimately determined that proceeding with the game was unfeasible.

Prior to the match's cancellation, the first half had concluded without any goals, showcasing a balanced contest, although the worsening weather impacted the players' performance significantly. At the time of suspension, the match stood at 0-0.

FIFA highlighted that the safety of the players was the paramount reason for the cancellation. With no forecasted improvement in weather and no alternative dates for rescheduling, the governing body deemed it necessary to call off the fixture entirely. This unexpected outcome underlines the rarity of weather-induced match cancellations in the tournament.

Both teams expressed understanding about the cancellation, acknowledging that extreme weather made it impossible to continue, despite extensive endeavors from the organizers.
