NBA Stars Rozier and Billups Detained Amid FBI Gambling Investigation

Post by : Mara Rahim

In a sweeping operation on Thursday, law enforcement detained numerous individuals, including NBA's Terry Rozier and Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups, in connection with a federal probe into unlawful sports betting and alleged poker game manipulations involving organized crime. Both Rozier and Billups have firmly denied the accusations.

Terry Rozier, aged 31, faces allegations of conspiring with others to skew bets on NBA matchups. Prosecutors assert that some players feigned injuries to tilt gambling odds. Rozier reportedly exited a game early due to an alleged foot injury, allowing his associates to cash in on bets exceeding $200,000. His legal counsel has refuted all claims of wrongdoing.

Chauncey Billups, a former NBA player now coaching the Trail Blazers, is among 31 individuals implicated in a distinct case concerning illegal poker operations. This plot reportedly involved New York organized crime families employing advanced techniques, such as specialized lenses and X-ray tables, to cheat during games. Victims incurred losses amounting to millions.

The NBA has announced that both Rozier and Billups are on immediate administrative leave while the league assesses the implications of the ongoing federal indictments. An NBA spokesperson reaffirmed the league's commitment to maintaining integrity. Rozier was released on bail, using his Florida residence as collateral, while Billups is anticipated to secure a significant bond following his arraignment in Portland.

Seven NBA contests from February 2023 to March 2024 are under investigation. Allegations suggest that Rozier influenced a particular game between the Charlotte Hornets and the New Orleans Pelicans, scoring only five points before exiting after nine minutes—contrasting his typical average of 21 points per game. These allegations raise serious questions about the integrity of sports betting.

The secondary indictment involves 31 individuals accused of manipulating poker games involving retired professional athletes. Prosecutors cite the participation of 13 members from prominent New York crime syndicates. Victims were allegedly drawn into high-stakes games across Las Vegas, Miami, Manhattan, and the Hamptons, enduring hefty financial losses through cheating. Reports indicate threats were used to compel payment.

Rozier’s legal team stressed that the case lacks substantial evidence, criticizing the reliance on dubious sources. Billups’ attorney has similarly rejected the charges, indicating a commitment to contest them vigorously. FBI representatives characterized the arrests as a coordinated effort across 11 states that targets significant fraud and theft.

The legalization of sports betting across the U.S. in 2018, following a Supreme Court ruling, has led to rapid industry growth, entangling key leagues and media ventures. Authorities consider the Rozier matter one of the most audacious displays of sports corruption since the advent of online betting.

Defendants face a multitude of charges, including robbery, extortion, wire and bank fraud, and illegal gambling operations. The alleged poker scam resulted in victims losing $7 million, with one person reportedly losing $1.8 million. FBI officials warned this might just be the “tip of the iceberg” and promised ongoing efforts to dismantle mafia involvement in illegal betting.
