Suicide Bombing Strikes Train Near Quetta, Leaving Many Casualties

Post by : Shweta

A tragic suicide bombing has struck a passenger train near Quetta in Pakistan’s Balochistan province, claiming the lives of at least 24 individuals and injuring over 70, as reported by local officials and rescue teams. The devastating explosion occurred near the Chaman Phatak railway crossing while the train was carrying security personnel and their families.

Authorities indicated that the attacker utilized a vehicle laden with explosives, which detonated as the train passed by. The explosion resulted in multiple train coaches derailing, with at least two cars flipping over and igniting into flames. Thick plumes of black smoke filled the air as rescue workers and bystanders rushed to assist the trapped passengers. Social media footage captured the ensuing chaos, featuring damaged rail tracks and emergency responders aiding the injured.

Reports confirm that many victims included Pakistan’s security forces and their families, who were traveling ahead of the Eid holidays. Civilians living nearby also sustained injuries, with local homes, shops, and vehicles suffering damage from the blast. Hospitals in Quetta declared emergencies as medical staff were summoned to treat the influx of injured victims, some of whom are in critical condition.

The banned militant group Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) subsequently claimed responsibility for the incident, stating that their aim was to target security personnel aboard the train. Officials have classified the event as a suicide attack, although investigations continue to uncover detailed information regarding the bomber and any supporting networks.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the act fiercely, labeling it a “cowardly act of terrorism.” President Asif Ali Zardari expressed his condolences to the victims' families and mandated that authorities offer optimal medical assistance to the injured. Government representatives stated that efforts against militant and separatist groups will persist in light of this violence.

Balochistan, known as Pakistan’s largest yet least developed province, has grappled with insurgency and violence for years. Separatist factions frequently target security forces, railways, government establishments, and infrastructure projects. Security analysts note a spike in attacks within this province in recent months, heightening concerns regarding public safety and regional stability. This latest bombing is considered one of the gravest assaults on railway transport in Pakistan in recent years.
