Record-Breaking Sale of the Imperial Fabergé Winter Egg

Record-Breaking Sale of the Imperial Fabergé Winter Egg

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

In a historic auction in London, the Imperial Winter Egg, a stunning Fabergé creation encrusted with diamonds, achieved a remarkable £22.9 million ($30.2 million), marking a new benchmark for the esteemed jeweller.

This masterpiece, commissioned in 1913 by Tsar Nicholas II for his mother, is celebrated as one of Fabergé’s finest works. Designed by Alma Theresia Pihl, one of the only two female artisans from the illustrious St. Petersburg workshop, its craftsmanship is nothing short of extraordinary.

With a height of 8.2cm, the egg is fashioned from rock crystal and embellished with rose-cut diamonds and intricate platinum snowflake designs. Inside, it reveals a delicate surprise—a small basket of white quartz flowers, exemplifying Fabergé’s renowned meticulousness.

The final auction price greatly eclipsed the former record of £8.9 million paid for another Fabergé egg in 2007. Of the original 50 eggs created for the Romanov dynasty between 1885 and 1917, only seven remain privately owned, enhancing the rarity of this acquisition.

The Winter Egg now proudly joins a select group of Fabergé treasures that have withstood the test of time, wars, and revolutions, epitomizing the enduring elegance and craftsmanship of the Imperial Russian heritage.
