EU Enhances Media Training Initiatives in Turkmenistan

Post by : Shakul

The European Union Delegation in Turkmenistan has bolstered its commitment to media development through a recent series of workshops in Ashgabat, aimed at enhancing skills in digital journalism, content creation, and artificial intelligence. Spanning from April 29 to May 6, 2026, the sessions were conducted at the Bouygues Turkmen training center, catering to journalists, educators, students, and media practitioners nationwide.

These workshops were made possible with collaboration from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, the EU, and the CARAVAN media project. Officials emphasized the program’s significance as a key educational initiative tailored to boost media literacy, fortify digital communication proficiencies, and assist media professionals in navigating the rapidly evolving landscape shaped by innovative technologies and AI.

During the opening remarks, Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Turkmenistan, Maciej Madalinski, underscored the crucial role of media development and information literacy in the EU’s partnership with Turkmenistan and Central Asia. He stressed that enhancing media literacy and establishing balanced information systems are integral to the EU’s regional cooperation framework.

Madalinski further noted that contemporary digital technologies and artificial intelligence are revolutionizing information creation, dissemination, and consumption globally. He highlighted how social media algorithms significantly influence audience engagement, making it increasingly challenging to differentiate between professional journalism and citizen-generated content. Such transformations present both opportunities and challenges for journalists and content creators.

The workshops were tailored to better equip attendees with a clearer understanding of these modern hurdles while refining their skills in digital media production. Topics explored included practical content creation techniques, ethical AI usage, media ethics, digital storytelling, and modern journalism's technological aspects. Participants also gained exposure to advanced digital instruments aimed at enhancing editorial workflows and communication strategies.

Leading the training were seasoned media professionals from Kazakhstan, including Gulim Amirkhanova and Aiganym Amirbekova. They imparted their expertise during interactive sessions, discussions, and practical media examples. Organizers emphasized that these workshops aimed to foster innovation and promote responsible journalism alongside critical thinking in today’s digital landscape.

This workshop series marks the second phase of the CARAVAN media project in Ashgabat, following a previous training program conducted in autumn 2025 that focused on media literacy and AI integration within journalism.

Attendees from educational institutions and media organizations expressed their gratitude for the initiative, praising the workshops as immensely beneficial for their professional journeys. Many highlighted the growing importance of mastering digital media tools and AI for journalists, educators, and students navigating the modern communication sphere.

The European Union remains dedicated to supporting educational, media, and digital transformation endeavors across Central Asia, aligning with its broader strategy for regional cooperation. Officials contend that bolstering media literacy, promoting responsible journalism, and facilitating professional development can play a vital role in fostering a more informed society, empowering media professionals to adeptly handle the challenges posed by the swiftly evolving digital environment.
