US Forces Disable Iranian Oil Tankers Amid Rising Tensions in Hormuz

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

In a significant escalation of tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, the United States disabled two Iranian oil tankers after clashes between Iranian and American forces. This incident unfolds despite a fragile ceasefire in the region.

The US military reported that the Iranian vessels attempted to violate an American blockade on Iranian ports before being struck on Friday. Footage from military sources depicted fighter jets targetting the vessels' smokestacks. Earlier this week, another Iranian tanker faced damage as a US aircraft targeted its rudder.

The clashes follow Iran's alleged missile and drone attacks on three US Navy ships operating in the area. The Pentagon confirmed that American forces defended themselves against these strikes and later retaliated against Iranian military infrastructure without sustaining damage to US vessels.

Simultaneously, the United Arab Emirates reported an Iranian attack involving both missiles and drones. According to its Defence Ministry, UAE air defense systems intercepted two ballistic missiles and three drones. Three individuals sustained injuries, but officials did not confirm the extent of the interception.

The resurgence of violence has renewed concerns about the ceasefire, which has remained in effect for nearly a month. The US is reportedly awaiting a response from Iran regarding a new proposal to de-escalate the situation, facilitate the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and establish limitations on Tehran’s nuclear activities.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed hopes for a “serious offer” from Iran soon and warned of a decisive military response to any attacks against American forces.

In response, Iran condemned the latest US military actions. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused the US of favoring military escalation over pursuing diplomatic resolutions.

Since the onset of conflict on February 28, triggered by military actions from the US and Israel, Iran has severely restricted movement through the Strait of Hormuz. This vital shipping channel for global oil trade has witnessed disruptions leading to heightened fuel prices and market instability.

Additionally, a cargo vessel reportedly caught fire during the overnight airstrikes, with Iranian reports indicating one sailor's death and ten injuries, though it remains unclear if this vessel was among the two tankers affected by US forces.

Satellite imagery examined by maritime analysts has revealed a significant oil spill in the Persian Gulf near Iran’s Kharg Island oil terminal, with estimates suggesting nearly 80,000 barrels could have leaked. Experts speculate military action may have contributed to this environmental incident.

Environmental specialists warn that if conditions worsen, this spill could affect the coastal regions of the UAE, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia within weeks, although some believe the oil may dissipate in offshore waters.

US President Donald Trump reiterated that the ceasefire remains in place but cautioned Iran about potential large-scale bombing if an agreement is not reached.

Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated that his government is in communication with both Washington and Tehran, aiming to thwart further escalation.

The ongoing situation is impacting international shipping, as hundreds of commercial vessels find themselves stuck in the Persian Gulf, coinciding with Iranian moves to assert control over maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. Global concern about the security of vital oil and trade routes has surged.
