Dubai has rolled out new stringent regulations regarding shop signage, aiming to improve the visual aesthetics of the city, minimize clutter, and bolster road safety.
The initiative is under the direction of the Dubai Civility Committee and governed by the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET). These new rules follow the Outdoor Advertising Manual launched in 2024, which was developed alongside the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), Dubai Municipality, and Mada Media overseeing out-of-home advertising within Dubai.
As per the set guidelines, each business is now allowed only one sign displaying its trade name on the storefront, prohibiting multiple signs or advertisements at a single location.
The regulations also define specific design criteria for signage. Trade names must be presented horizontally and Arabic text must precede English text. Additionally, displays are allowed to project from only one side of the shopfront.
To ensure coherence throughout the city, the size of signage must be proportional to the business’s storefront. Oversized, bulky, or disproportionately large signs are forbidden. Lighting regulations are also stipulated, including brightness restrictions and the requirement for approved measurement tools, with bright white backgrounds discouraged.
Animated or moving signage is explicitly banned, as all trade-name displays must remain static.
The guidelines further prohibit trade-name signs on building balconies and the exterior facades of offices, clinics, and commercial units above the ground floor.
The DET will manage the issuance of signage permits and conduct inspections to ensure adherence to these regulations. Authorities have called on business owners and related parties to comply with the rules, ensuring a uniform approach to storefront aesthetics.
Officials stress that these measures aim to lessen random decorative elements as well as excessive lighting while enhancing Dubai's overall urban landscape. This initiative supports the vision of the Dubai Civility Committee and aligns with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, which prioritizes the improvement of the city’s aesthetic charm and international reputation.
