In a high-octane DP World ILT20 Season 4 clash, the Giants defeated the Sharjah Warriorz in a thrilling chase, sealing the win with just two balls to spare. UAE spinner Aayan Khan’s brilliant three-wicket haul restricted the Warriorz to 157/6 in the first innings, setting the stage for a tense second innings. Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s quickfire fifty and Azmatullah Omarzai’s impactful cameo helped the Giants cross the line in style.
The defeat marked the Warriorz’s third consecutive loss, while the Giants notched their third win in four games, consolidating their hold on second place in the points table.
The Giants began their innings with aggression, thanks to Gurbaz (50 off 36) and Vince (35 off 28). The duo immediately took charge, smashing 21 runs off Wasim Akram in the second over. Their attacking mindset was evident as they cleared the ropes five times during the powerplay, racing to 73/0 and putting the Warriors under immense pressure.
Vince’s dismissal by Sikandar Raza in the eighth over slowed the Giants slightly, but the Warriorz bowling attack, led by Raza and Adil Rashid, kept the game competitive. Moeen Ali partnered Gurbaz during the middle overs, but his innings ended in the 13th over when Rashid castled him. Gurbaz’s fifty came in just 34 balls, including four towering sixes, before he fell in pursuit of another big hit.
With 47 runs needed off 39 balls, Gerhard Erasmus (15 off 18) and Omarzai (28 off 21) steadied the chase. Omarzai’s crucial six in the final over proved decisive, ensuring the Giants’ victory despite his dismissal on the very next ball.
Earlier, the Warriorz had a steady powerplay despite the early loss of Tom Kohler-Cadmore (7 off 8) to Mark Adair. Johnson Charles (36 off 32) and Kusal Mendis (23 off 15) guided the team to 48/1 by the end of the fielding restrictions, with Charles hitting four boundaries and a six, while Mendis added a four and a six of his own.
The middle overs belonged to the Giants’ spinners. Aayan Khan produced an exceptional spell of 3/17 in four overs, removing the well-settled Charles and Mendis, followed by Tim David (19 off 14), leaving the Warriorz in trouble at 94/4 after 13.3 overs. Liam Dawson complemented Khan’s performance with economical bowling, claiming Sikandar Raza’s wicket and conceding just 21 runs in four overs. Mark Adair returned to dismiss Shubham Ranjane (17 off 21), further restricting the Warriorz to 119/6 in the 18th over.
A late flurry from Dwaine Pretorius (36 off 17) brought some momentum, as he partnered Adil Rashid (12 off 6) to score 36 runs in just 16 balls, taking 20 runs off the penultimate over bowled by Omarzai.
Player of the Match Aayan Khan said, “It was a spinning pitch, and I’m happy to take a few wickets. Bowling four overs felt great, especially since I hadn’t bowled in a few games. This match was a confidence booster.”
Warriorz captain Tim Southee reflected, “We fought till the end. Going 0–3 isn’t ideal, but there’s a chance to bounce back. The spinners bowled well and kept us in the game till the last overs.”
