US President Donald Trump will undergo a physical exam on Friday at Walter Reed Medical Center, following rising questions about his health after recent visible bruising and swelling.
The White House described the visit as Trump’s “routine yearly check-up.” However, the 79-year-old president had already had an annual exam just six months ago, on April 11. Since then, Trump has been seen with swollen ankles and a persistent bruise on his right hand, drawing public attention.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that Trump might travel to the Middle East shortly after his visit to Walter Reed.
Trump was diagnosed in July with chronic venous insufficiency, a condition where damaged valves in the veins make it harder for blood to flow from the legs to the heart. Doctors said this is a common condition, especially in people over 70, affecting about one in 20 adults. Physicians also reported no signs of heart failure, kidney issues, or systemic illness.
The bruising on Trump’s hand is believed to be minor, caused by frequent hand-shaking and a side effect of his daily aspirin therapy, which he takes for cardiovascular health.
Trump, the oldest US president in history, has often emphasized his good health. In a recent interview, he said, “I feel the same or better than I did 30 years ago.”
This physical exam comes amid ongoing scrutiny of presidential health, especially as previous leaders’ health issues, like those of former President Joe Biden, influenced public confidence and election decisions.
