dnata Enhances Cargo Operations with New Screening Hub at Dubai Airport

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

dnata, a prominent global air services provider, is revolutionizing cargo operations at Dubai International Airport (DXB) with a state-of-the-art control room dedicated to centralized cargo screening. This essential facility, developed in collaboration with Dubai Police, aims to enhance the speed, safety, and efficiency of air cargo inspections.

The new control room integrates advanced automation, real-time surveillance, and robust security measures. It exemplifies Dubai's continuous investment in smart systems to bolster trade and improve aviation logistics.

Unified Command for Cargo Screening

This innovative screening control area allows Dubai Police officers to remotely oversee and operate six X-ray machines from a single location. Previously, cargo screening took place in various areas of the warehouse, which was time-consuming and labor-intensive.

With the new setup, all operations occur seamlessly under one roof. Each X-ray is connected to One Cargo, dnata’s digital cargo management system. This integration facilitates immediate data sharing, enhances communication among teams, and accelerates decision-making processes, ultimately minimizing delays and expediting the handling of screened cargo.

Guillaume Crozier, dnata’s Chief Cargo Officer, stated that this initiative is pivotal in the company's transformation journey, emphasizing that the shift toward centralized screening reflects dnata's commitment to smarter operational practices and highlights improved collaboration with Dubai Police.

Enhanced Efficiency and Cargo Volume

By centralizing screening operations, dnata anticipates a cargo throughput increase of approximately three percent annually. While this may seem modest, such efficiency gains yield substantial benefits in a high-volume sector, leading to reduced wait times and lowered need for additional manpower and equipment.

Currently, dnata supports over 120 airline customers at DXB, handling around 60,000 tonnes of cargo monthly. Earlier in the year, they reported processing over one million tonnes of cargo between April 2024 and March 2025—the highest recorded volume for both DXB and Dubai World Central (DWC) combined, marking a year-on-year increase of about 30 percent.

These metrics signify dnata's push for automation, as growing demand for cargo services necessitates smarter systems to manage increased traffic effectively.

Growth in Dubai’s Logistics Sector

Rising cargo volumes in Dubai can be attributed to various trends:

  • thriving e-commerce

  • growing regional consumer demands

  • Dubai’s strategic role as a global transit hub

This emirate has emerged as a pivotal link between Asia, Europe, and Africa, necessitating advanced logistics technology at its airport to remain competitive.

The new screening facility is part of this vision, promoting workflow efficiency while contributing to Dubai's overall digital transformation strategy.

Improved Security and Resource Allocation

The new system notably reduces manual interactions during various screening stages, aiming to diminish the probability of human errors and enhance oversight. Integrated features like live imaging, digital reporting tools, and automated tracking ensure transparency and traceability in each shipment's movement.

The centralization process also fosters:

  • less unnecessary cargo movement

  • lower fuel consumption

  • more precise decision-making

  • optimal space management

By minimizing manual touches, dnata can refine labor and equipment utilization. They are also empowered to conduct advanced data analytics to better strategize cargo flows.

Collaborative Efforts of dnata and Dubai Police

The establishment of the control room reflects a successful collaboration between public and private sectors, focusing on real-time monitoring and meticulous reporting functions.

dnata emphasizes that this initiative epitomizes Dubai's cooperative development ethos, highlighting shared objectives and collaborative trust between authorities and industry stakeholders to ensure sustained trade performance and global connectivity.

Beyond Screening Innovations

The control room is merely one facet of dnata’s commitment to advance cargo operations. The company is also exploring and implementing new technologies such as:

Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs)

These robots transport shipments within warehouses efficiently, minimizing forklift operations and better managing available space.

Smart Dimensioning and Load Optimization Technologies

These innovations utilize sensors and algorithms to determine shipment dimensions and weight accurately, enabling more efficient packing of Unit Load Devices (ULDs), optimizing space, and lowering expenses.

Data-Driven Planning

With precise cargo data, dnata can plan routes, allocate resources, and deploy personnel with greater accuracy.

According to dnata’s leaders, technology's effectiveness is only maximized when complemented by a skilled workforce. They credit their employees for embracing digital solutions and spearheading operational enhancements.

Envisioning the Future of Cargo Operations

The launch of this centralized control room signifies a shift in the cargo industry toward automation and enhanced methodologies. dnata’s emphasis on remote monitoring, data analysis, and automation offers a glimpse into a future where cargo operations are:

  • accelerated

  • sustainable

  • secured

  • cost-efficient

Dubai's aspirations in aviation and logistics highlight its goal to achieve global leadership. Initiatives like this new screening hub place dnata at the forefront of enhancing the city’s competitive edge.
