Acclaimed television star Dipika Kakar, best known for her role in Sasural Simar Ka, has bravely discussed her ongoing fight against liver cancer. In a revealing chat on Bharti Singh and Haarsh Limbachiyaa’s popular podcast, she shared candid insights into her diagnosis, the treatment she has undergone, and the emotional strain the illness has placed on her and her family.
Courage in the Face of Diagnosis
Despite a lifestyle devoted to health, Dipika expressed her shock upon receiving her diagnosis, which surprised her medical team as well. “Honestly, my surgeon, Dr. Somnath Chattopadhyay, and my family physician, Dr. Tushar Shah, were equally surprised. Despite their years of experience, they couldn’t explain how this happened to me,” she confessed. Speculations suggested a possible toxicity, yet a definitive cause remained elusive. Dipika stated, “I have never smoked and have always attempted to maintain a balanced lifestyle. Yes, I enjoy food, but not excessively or unhealthily.”
Initial Symptoms and Misdiagnosis
Reflecting on the symptoms that prompted her to seek medical attention, Dipika initially thought her discomfort stemmed from gallbladder issues during her pregnancy with her son, Ruhaan. As medical screenings during pregnancy primarily focus on the baby, her liver functions appeared normal.
However, postpartum pain escalated significantly, causing her to express concern to her husband, Shoaib. Initially misdiagnosed as acidity, further investigations eventually revealed the truth.
Identification of the Tumor
Diagnostic scans not only uncovered gallbladder stones but alarmingly indicated a 9-centimeter tumor on her liver. Initially, medications were used to manage her symptoms, but as pain persisted, additional tests were warranted.
She highlighted the importance of advanced imaging in her diagnosis, stating, “In the first week of November, I’ll be undergoing my FAPI scan again. A FAPI scan is similar to a CT scan but specifically tailored to find cancer cells in the body, aiding in understanding cancer spread prior to surgery or treatment.”
Treatment Progress and Current Health
After undergoing surgery that successfully removed about 22% of her liver, including the entire tumor, she felt relieved that the cancer had remained localized. “During my last FAPI scan, no cancer cells were detected elsewhere in the body,” she noted.
Currently, she is receiving oral targeted therapy akin to chemotherapy, which aims to combat cancer cells and prevent a recurrence. This regimen is slated to last two years. Consistent monitoring with blood tests and tumor markers has thus far yielded encouraging results, with no signs of cancer returning.
Looking Forward: Hope and Vigilance
Dipika underscored the significance of continual monitoring in her recovery. “We have been regularly overseeing my condition, and thankfully, all results have come back normal. However, periodic scans remain essential to ensure everything stays in check,” she advised.
Despite facing emotional and physical hurdles, Dipika's resilience shines through as she embraces her faith and family support during this challenging journey. Her candidness regarding her health struggles has struck a chord with many and inspires those enduring similar battles.
