In a remarkable display of talent, Didarbek Jumabayev, a rising star in weightlifting from Turkmenistan, showcased his prowess at the 2026 Junior World Weightlifting Championships held in Ismailia, Egypt. The 17-year-old secured a silver medal in the clean and jerk and a bronze in the overall standings in the men’s 79 kg category, marking a significant achievement for Turkmen athletics on the international stage.
Competitors from 53 countries and over 270 athletes participated in this prestigious event, confronting Didarbek in a fiercely contested men’s 79 kg division featuring 17 lifters from 14 nations. Despite the intense competition, Jumabayev emerged as a top contender, placing him firmly among the elite junior weightlifters across the globe.
In the snatch event, the Turkmen weightlifter made four successful lifts out of six attempts. He achieved lifts of 144 kg and 148 kg in his first two tries but was unable to complete a 151 kg lift on his last attempt. Following the snatch rounds, he stood at sixth place, just three kilograms off the leading positions.
The clean and jerk segment proved pivotal for Jumabayev. He successfully lifted 182 kg and 187 kg but fell short on his attempt to lift 189 kg. His impressive performance earned him the coveted silver medal in this category.
Didarbek's combined total of 335 kg, comprising 148 kg from the snatch and 187 kg from the clean and jerk, secured him the bronze in the overall tally, just one kilogram behind Armenia’s Narek Mkrtchyan, who claimed silver. The championship was clinched by Egyptian athlete Hussein Abdelrahman Hamuda, who set a new benchmark with a total of 341 kg.
This achievement marks Didarbek's inaugural medals at the Junior World Championships, complementing his earlier accolades at the 2025 Youth World Championships in Lima, where he was vice world champion in the under-17 category with a total of three silver medals.
Beginning his journey in the Garashsyzlyk district of Dashoguz velayat, Jumabayev honed his skills at the “Olymp” secondary sports school in Ashgabat. He currently trains under the guidance of Mansur Rejepov, head coach of Turkmenistan’s weightlifting teams.
Officials from the State Committee for Physical Culture and Sports in Turkmenistan lauded Jumabayev’s success, emphasizing the significance of nurturing young sports talent. Senior sports figure Osmanguly Handurdyyev extended his congratulations to the athlete and coaching staff for their commendable performance at the tournament.
Turkmenistan's delegation to the 2026 Junior World Championships included nine athletes, among them five females and four males. Other competitors also made commendable attempts, with Oghulshat Amanova narrowly missing a bronze in the women’s 53 kg category and finishing fourth, while Shabnam Kerimbayeva placed eighth. These performances reflect Turkmenistan’s burgeoning potential in the realm of international weightlifting.
