Pollution Crisis: Delhi-NCR Air Quality Reaches Hazardous Levels

Post by : Raina Nasser

On Sunday, residents of Delhi-NCR awoke to a thick veil of smog, as the Air Quality Index (AQI) skyrocketed to hazardous levels, severely impeding visibility throughout the region. Areas such as India Gate, Mahipalpur, and East Delhi reported alarming air quality, inciting urgent appeals for action against the escalating pollution levels.

Concerned citizens and environmental activists rallied at India Gate on Sunday, demanding immediate action to tackle the deteriorating air quality. Although some participants were briefly detained by authorities for unauthorized assembly, they were subsequently released. Critiquing the government’s response, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi emphasized the necessity for prompt action on pollution instead of penalizing individuals advocating for cleaner air.

Rahul Gandhi remarked, “Today's AQI in Delhi-NCR is alarmingly high. Peaceful citizens advocating for clean air shouldn’t be treated as offenders. Immediate measures are essential.”

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, speaking ahead of the MCD by-elections, pointed out the stagnation in development under prior administrations, linking pollution to inadequate urban planning and infrastructure. Additionally, Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal announced her intention to address the issue of air quality deterioration in Delhi during the forthcoming winter session of Parliament, warning that winter smog transforms the capital into a “gas chamber,” endangering the health of the lungs, heart, brain, and even unborn children.

Beyond the pollution emergency, Delhi has faced other public safety issues, including the tragic electrocution of a 23-year-old woman in Mahipalpur.

Authorities are diligently monitoring the situation. Residents are advised to reduce outdoor activities, wear masks, and stay updated on air quality reports as the AQI in Delhi-NCR remains alarmingly high today.

The escalating pollution levels have prompted vigorous discussions on social media and civic platforms, with urgent calls for government intervention to avert further public health threats.
