Deion Sanders, the famous football coach of the University of Colorado Buffaloes, shared some very personal news recently. He revealed that he was diagnosed with a serious form of bladder cancer earlier this year. But now, after going through surgery and months of recovery, he says he’s free of cancer and ready to lead his team in the 2025 football season.

Sanders, also known as “Coach Prime,” spoke about his experience for the first time in a video that was shown to the media. He said that during the offseason, doctors discovered cancer during one of his regular health check-ups. At first, he kept the news private because he didn’t want people to worry, especially his family and team.

Discovery and Diagnosis
The cancer was found by accident during a CT scan. Sanders had been having check-ups because of earlier health problems. He had already gone through more than 14 surgeries since 2021. These included surgeries on his legs due to blood clots, and he even had two toes removed. So, he was used to medical problems, but this time, it was more serious.

Doctors told him that the bladder cancer was aggressive. He had two options: remove the bladder completely or try chemotherapy and radiation. Sanders chose surgery. He said he trusted God and believed he would make it through. The operation removed his bladder, and doctors used a part of his intestine to make a new one, called a "neobladder."

Recovery Wasn’t Easy
The surgery was very serious, and the recovery was tough. Sanders lost about 25 pounds. He had to learn how to live with the new bladder. He said one of the hardest parts was not being able to control his bladder like before. He joked about wearing adult diapers and having to take frequent bathroom breaks during practice. Even though it was difficult, he stayed positive and never gave up.

Sanders said he didn’t want to feel sorry for himself. He stayed focused on getting better. He had strong support from his medical team, his family, and his friends. One of his close friends, former NFL star Randy Moss, called and prayed for him regularly.

Coaching Through It All
Even during the hardest days, Sanders said he never stopped thinking about football. Coaching is a big part of his life. He said he told the doctors, “Do whatever you have to do, just let me coach.” He didn’t want to miss the 2025 season.

Now that he’s recovering well, he’s ready to return to coaching. The Buffaloes’ first game is set for August 29 against Georgia Tech. Sanders says he feels good and is excited to be back with his team. Athletic director Rick George also said he fully supports Sanders and is happy he’s returning.

Keeping It Quiet at First
Sanders didn’t tell many people about the cancer. Not even most of his family knew the full details. He said he didn’t want to scare them. He told only a few close people and his doctors. He waited until he had good news before sharing it with the world. He wanted to be sure that he had beaten cancer before making an announcement.

He also said he prepared for the worst. He wrote a will and got his affairs in order. But he always believed he would get through it. “I knew I’d be back,” he said. “I just didn’t know how long it would take.”

Encouraging Others to Get Checked
Sanders hopes that by sharing his story, he can help others. He wants people to go to the doctor and not ignore signs that something might be wrong. He says it’s important to catch health problems early. He didn’t feel many symptoms from the cancer, which is why regular check-ups are so important.

He said many men don’t want to talk about health problems, especially ones related to the bladder. But he wants to break that silence. He said there’s nothing to be ashamed of and hopes his story will inspire others to take their health seriously.

Looking Back and Ahead
Deion Sanders has always been known for being tough, focused, and full of energy. He was a star football and baseball player before becoming a coach. He is in both the College and Pro Football Hall of Fame. When he became head coach at Colorado, many people were excited to see what he could do.

In his first year with the Buffaloes, the team struggled. But by the second year, they had a strong 9–4 season. His son, Shedeur Sanders, played quarterback and became a star. Travis Hunter, another key player, also became one of the best in college football. After that successful season, Sanders signed a big contract extension to stay with Colorado through 2029.

Now, in 2025, Sanders faces new challenges. His son and Travis Hunter have both moved on to the NFL. So he’s working with a younger team and helping new players grow. Two quarterbacks, freshman Julian Lewis and experienced player Kaidon Salter, are battling for the starting job.

Even with these changes, Sanders is ready. He said he’s more focused than ever. “I’m not just here to win games,” he said. “I’m here to change lives.”

A Coach, a Fighter, and a Leader
Through his battle with cancer, Sanders has shown the same determination that made him a great player. He didn’t give up, even when things looked bad. He faced pain, fear, and uncertainty with strength and faith. And now, he’s back doing what he loves most: coaching and guiding young men.

Sanders says he’s grateful for every day. He knows how lucky he is to have beaten cancer. And he wants to use his second chance to help others. He’s not just a coach—he’s a fighter, a role model, and a true leader.
