Attacks on Baul Singers in Bangladesh Raise Concerns

Post by : Raina Nasser

In recent weeks, Bangladesh's baul singers—a community of mystic musicians celebrated for their poetry and spiritual performances—have faced serious threats. On Wednesday, an assault by a radical Islamist group left at least three baul performers injured outside the Thakurgaon district court. The perpetrators are believed to be linked to Tawhidi Janata, an extremist group.

Recognized by UNESCO for their unique cultural contributions, bauls utilize instruments such as the Ektara, khol drums, and cymbals in their performances, which intertwine Hindu and Sufi spiritual themes. Their artistic focus is on inner spirituality and the quest for soul liberation.

These violent incidents have emerged amidst heightened tensions following the arrest of well-known baul artist Abul Sarkar on blasphemy charges. Sarkar's detention ignited protests from various segments of society, including civil groups, students, and artists, who fear escalating religious extremism under current interim leader, Muhammad Yunus.

While Yunus has not made a public statement regarding the assaults, his press secretary described the violence as "deplorable" and confirmed an ongoing investigation. Observers contend that radical Islamist factions have gained confidence during Yunus' administration, especially after some previously incarcerated extremists have been released.

The main opposition party, BNP, has strongly condemned the attacks, labeling them as "horrific acts." Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir affirmed that baul performances are integral to the nation's cultural identity, warning that such targeting must not be tolerated.

The recent wave of violence against bauls is part of a broader trend since the removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, where extremist groups have also disrupted cultural events and vandalized Sufi shrines, showcasing the escalating tensions for minority and cultural communities across Bangladesh.
