Deadly Clash in Lake Chad: Boko Haram and ISWAP Suffer Heavy Losses

Post by : Raina Nasser

A brutal confrontation erupted on Sunday between Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in Dogon Chiku, situated by Lake Chad, claiming the lives of an estimated 200 militants according to local intelligence and militia operatives. This clash reinforces the deep ideological and territorial discord that continues to plague these extremist factions in northeast Nigeria.

Accounts from witnesses and former militants reveal severe casualties on both fronts. An anti-jihadist militia member assisting Nigerian troops, Babakura Kola, noted, "About 200 Boko Haram terrorists were killed during the engagement." Additionally, a former Boko Haram operative, referred to as Saddiku, mentioned that ISWAP also endured around 200 losses and reportedly lost several weapons. Boko Haram reportedly sustained minimal losses, with just four of their fighters confirmed dead.

"This may be the most severe encounter between these factions since they began their hostilities," Saddiku conveyed from Maiduguri, the capital city of Borno state, which is at the heart of the insurgency. A Nigerian intelligence official corroborated the extent of the violence, estimating at least 150 dead, and labeled the event a critical turning point in the ongoing conflict.

Since their division in 2016 over ideological disputes, Boko Haram and ISWAP have been entrenched in a lethal rivalry, particularly in the strategic Lake Chad area, now a nexus of jihadist operations and territorial contention.

This latest skirmish highlights the region's precariousness and the persistent threats both organizations present, despite ongoing counter-insurgency measures undertaken by Nigerian forces and allied militias. Analysts emphasize that this internal strife not only undermines both groups but also endangers local civilians, who risk displacement and violence as a result of these clashes.

As security forces remain vigilant, this tragic confrontation serves as a potent reminder of the continuing instability and humanitarian crises besieging the Lake Chad basin.
