Cheng Lei Chronicles Transformation from Imprisonment to Art

Post by : Shakul

After enduring nearly three years in a Chinese prison, Australian journalist Cheng Lei is reconstructing her life by transforming her traumatic experiences into a memoir, a stage play, and a campaign that sheds light on the distressing realities of China’s judicial system.

Originally from China, Cheng was detained in Beijing in 2020, while serving as a television anchor for CCTV, facing serious allegations of transferring state secrets to foreign countries, which ultimately resulted in her conviction.

Since her release and consequent return to Australia in October 2023, Cheng has begun to articulate her experiences in detail. Her memoir and the stage play titled “1154 Days” reflect the exact number of days she spent behind bars in China.

Scheduled to debut in Melbourne, the play dives into the psychological turmoil of incarceration, surveillance, and the stigmas associated with China’s opaque penal frameworks. Cheng acknowledges that this period forced her to reconstruct her identity, as she had lost nearly all her previous sense of self.

Cheng identified the first six months in detention under China’s Residential Surveillance at a Designated Location system (RSDL) as particularly harrowing, marked by isolation, enforced silence, limited freedom, and constant observation.

She perceives her plight as symptomatic of escalating political tensions between China and Australia, arising after Australia’s 2020 demands for an inquiry into the COVID-19 virus origins. This diplomatic strife led to heightened warnings for Australians about potential arbitrary detentions in China.

Now residing in Melbourne with her children, Cheng has re-entered the world of journalism, taking on roles as a television presenter and columnist. Surprisingly, she has ventured into stand-up comedy, attributing the resilience she developed during incarceration to her newfound humor.

In addition to sharing her own narrative, Cheng feels a duty to advocate for fellow prisoners and activists in China who remain voiceless and unable to recount their stories.

Her situation continues to garner global interest, reflecting ongoing discussions about human rights, press freedom, and the intricate diplomatic relations between China and Western nations.
