Hollywood is commemorating a cinematic icon as it kicks off the 100th birth anniversary celebrations of the legendary actress and model, Marilyn Monroe. A range of events across Los Angeles pays tribute to a star whose impact on film, fashion, and culture remains powerful even decades after her passing.
The festivities commenced in Hollywood, where Monroe was born, drawing fans to the famous TCL Chinese Theatre. Special remembrances included a symbolic birthday cake and a hundred roses placed by her celebrated handprints. This tribute illustrates Monroe’s enduring connection to Hollywood’s Golden Age and her iconic status within the entertainment realm.
In conjunction with the centennial, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures has launched a significant exhibition titled Marilyn Monroe: Hollywood Icon. The exhibit features numerous original artifacts linked to Monroe’s extraordinary career, granting guests an intimate glimpse into the life of a woman who transformed from a challenging upbringing into a global icon.
Among the prominent attractions is the iconic pink dress from Monroe’s role in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. This gown, famously worn during her memorable rendition of Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend, continues to be one of cinema's most recognized outfits and stands as a highlight of the exhibition.
During June, audiences can enjoy screenings of Monroe’s classic films, introducing her timeless work to new generations. Viewers will revisit critically acclaimed movies such as The Asphalt Jungle, Niagara, The Seven Year Itch, Some Like It Hot, and The Misfits, which solidified Monroe's legacy as one of the most impactful stars of the 20th century.
The celebrations will lead to a prominent auction featuring nearly 200 pieces of Monroe memorabilia. Collectors worldwide are expected to vie for rare items ranging from personal photographs and handwritten notes to scripts and documents from her uncompleted project, Something’s Got to Give. This auction underscores the ongoing intrigue surrounding Monroe’s legacy.
Born in Los Angeles on June 1, 1926, Monroe evolved from a factory worker and model into a cultural icon. Beyond her glamorous facade, she challenged Hollywood’s established norms, founded her own production company, and fought for greater respect and opportunities for women in entertainment. A century later, her influence still resonates with filmmakers, artists, and fans globally.
