Canadian MP Alerts on Surge of Violence Against Minorities in Bangladesh

Post by : Mina Rahman

A Canadian parliamentarian has voiced grave concerns over the rise of violence and disorder in Bangladesh under the leadership of interim Prime Minister Muhammad Yunus. The nation is experiencing a troubling increase in assaults against minority groups, particularly Hindus, following the political upheaval nearly a year ago that removed former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Shuvaloy Majumdar, a Canadian MP and advocate for human rights, condemned the recent instances of mob violence as appalling and unacceptable. He highlighted the horrific lynching of Dipu Chandra Das, whose shocking demise and the subsequent disrespect shown to his remains have ignited widespread outrage. The manner in which the victim's family first learned of this tragedy via social media rather than official channels underscores significant government negligence.

Majumdar pointed out that these violent occurrences represent a broader trend targeting minorities and political allies since the political shift. Far from easing tensions, hostility and violence have escalated, manifesting in horrific acts like public lynchings.

The MP questioned the oversight and authority of the interim government, calling for transparency and accountability. He expressed concern that conducting free and fair elections in such a tumultuous environment—particularly with the proscription of fundamental political parties—poses a significant hurdle.

Majumdar connected the ongoing crisis to the historical traumas of the 1971 liberation war, suggesting that lingering extremist sentiments continue to compromise Bangladesh’s political institutions. He also raised alarms over the increasing hostility towards the media and liberal voices, indicating an alarming growth of religious fundamentalism that threatens the country's secular ethos.

He appealed to the global community for a decisive response to tackle the underlying issues fueling this violence, emphasizing the need to protect all citizens, irrespective of their faith or background.
