In Can Tho, over 45,200 ninth-grade learners have registered for the 2026-2027 high school admissions cycle, as the city embraces a dual-system model that incorporates both entrance exams and performance-based selections. This strategic initiative by education officials aims to alleviate exam-related stress while promoting equitable access to secondary education.
The Can Tho Department of Education and Training reports that 45,231 junior high school graduates qualify for Grade 10 this year. The city is advancing its modernization goals through a centralized digital enrollment platform designed to streamline registrations, admissions management, and announcement of results via an integrated online system.
A notable alteration in this year’s admission procedure is the dual approach to enrollment. Under this reformed model, 59 high schools will administer entrance examinations with the goal of enrolling 23,120 students. Concurrently, 32 institutions will base admissions on academic performance, providing 9,184 spots.
Officials have indicated that schools utilizing performance-based admissions are typically situated in regions where graduating student numbers align closely with the capacity to enroll. In these scenarios, competitive entrance exams would yield minimal advantages, adding unnecessary pressure on students and their families.
Danh Hoang Nguyen, Deputy Director of the Can Tho Department of Education and Training, stated that this selection-based model mirrors local educational contexts and aligns with goals to lower societal costs while ensuring continued educational opportunities for students after junior high. Authorities assert that the revamped system promotes a more equitable and student-friendly admission process.
For schools experiencing much higher demand than available slots, particularly in urban areas, entrance exams remain the favored approach. Education officials emphasized that competitive assessments maintain transparency and fairness, enabling schools to choose students who fulfill academic criteria effectively.
To facilitate a seamless admissions process, the department has organized 90 examination boards across the city. Over 450 educators, administrators, and IT personnel have undergone specialized training in the management of the digital examination system. Authorities have confirmed that all arrangements regarding examination materials, logistics, security, transport, facilities, and technical infrastructure comply with national standards.
