Truckee, California – February 18, 2026 – Eight backcountry skiers have been confirmed dead and a ninth is presumed dead after their group was struck by a massive avalanche in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains. The disaster is the deadliest U.S. avalanche in 45 years.
The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. PT on Tuesday, as a group of 15 skiers, including four guides from Blackbird Mountain Guides, was returning from a three-day guided skiing excursion. The avalanche, described as being the size of a football field, swept through the area near Castle Peak, about 10 miles northwest of Lake Tahoe.
Six skiers survived the avalanche by taking refuge in a temporary shelter made of tarpaulin sheets. They used emergency beacons and text messaging to alert rescuers to their location. Among the survivors was one of the guides, according to Nevada County Sheriff Shannan Moon.
Two rescue teams, consisting of about 50 personnel from Boreal Mountain Ski Resort and Tahoe Donner’s Alder Creek Adventure Center, faced extreme conditions to reach the site. They navigated through blinding snow, strong winds, and dangerous terrain. Rescuers traveled part of the way by snowcat vehicles and then switched to skis to reduce the risk of triggering further slides.
“Extreme weather conditions, I would say, is an understatement,” Sheriff Moon said, highlighting the dangers faced by both the skiers and rescuers. Nearby stretches of Interstate 80 were closed due to zero visibility during the rescue operation.
The deceased skiers included one person who was married to a member of a search-and-rescue team. Another skier suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was being treated in a hospital.
The Sierra Nevada area receives more than 400 inches (10 meters) of snow each winter, making it one of the snowiest regions in the Western Hemisphere. Authorities said the avalanche risk was predicted, and the sheriff’s office had been in contact with the guide company about safety concerns.
Avalanches are responsible for an average of 27 deaths per winter in the United States. Before this incident, six fatalities had already been reported this season. This disaster marks one of the highest single-event losses in recent U.S. history, surpassing the 1982 Alpine Meadows avalanche in California, which killed seven, and approaching the 1981 Mount Rainier tragedy that claimed 11 lives.
Experts caution against venturing into avalanche-prone areas during heavy storms. Ski groups usually minimize risk by sending skiers one at a time through dangerous zones, so help can be quickly provided if someone becomes trapped.
Blackbird Mountain Guides, which was founded in 2020 and operates in multiple regions, stated it is cooperating with authorities in the rescue operation. The company provides guided skiing trips, alpine climbing trips, and avalanche education courses.
This tragic event serves as a reminder of the powerful forces of nature and the critical importance of safety measures, preparation, and awareness when enjoying winter sports in backcountry areas.
